correct me if i'm wrong but out there somewhere is an interview with the legend John Coltrane, an innovator of improvisational free form jazz, and when asked about what it was like to perform with monk he replied something to the effect of "he is truly the hardest to follow and you find yourself struggling to keep up with him." just paraphrasing. but i found that shocking until i went and listened to monk. he is a true genius and virtuoso!!

this is definitely charlie rouse. coltrane died in 1967. besides, charlie rouse was essentially monk's standard tenor player. even without knowing what he looks like, his sound is unmistakable.

This song is the reason I bought the Monk CD "Genius of Modern Music". My grandmother's name was Ruby. Its a special name to me and the first time I heard this song I was truly touched. So I had to have the CD. I had to hear this song! Sounds corny but.....oh well...Ive always loved Monk and this is one of his absolute best songs. THANK YO for sharing the video. I strongly agree. As much as i like Monks solo stuff, and when he worked with Coltrane for instance, still it somehow isn't Monk without Charlie Rouses sax. Kind of like Paul McCartney without John Lennon or Simon without Garfunkel or Chuck D without Flava Flav something like that :)

Bitches Brew, though a jazz masterpiece, has never been an easy listen for me. Technically, it's unreal and was a breakthrough to a whole new plane for the genre. Me, I prefer Kind of Blue. With all due respect, Miles Davis IS jazz. Whether he's high or not, here is not the is issue. Nobody's perfect. Let's judge him on his legacy alone. Singlehandedly, he was at the forefront of every major jazz genre of the last 50 years, because he STARTED cool jazz in the 50s, modal jazz in the 60s and jazz rock fusion in the 70s. The first jazz musician with rock star status. Wynton Marsalis patterned his early albums AFTER Davis's 60s albums.

You're the one that's retarded, swedishpirates. Technically, some of Miles' best playing was from about 1968-1971. I don't think that Miles was high all the time when he performed during this period, but would you discount any of Charlie Parker's recordings because he may may have been high while making them? Or any of Lee Morgan's, for that matter?

Flying Foo Balls I heard that he raised his head and trumpet because as you blow on a trumpet fluid builds up and it equalled out that fluid. Miles could hear every note and distortion. You will see him also go to the side and empty out that fluid through the release valve. Miles was the man. Some people dont like him ((Stanley Crouch) but that was part of his style. Coolest muthafucka there was. Pro or con, he had style, his own.

he is obsessed with fifth intervals in this performance, Bb-F goes to C-G several times and there is a wholetone bridge than tune starts in F minor, it might be considered as subdominant-dominant and tonic relation. On the other hand he is a god of rhythm thats why it sounds really charming. it's not just the harmony.. try to clap your hands and count 4 you'll see the rhytmic madness, there are amazing syncopations..

Just today I heard another great Miles' solo: the live version of "Straight No Chaser", from the album originally called "Jazz @ the Plaza", with Trane, Cannonball & Bill Evans - who had a little trouble keeping up with the fast tempo...

The style developed in the mid-60's by the Second Quintet was based on "linearity", not "running chords" which was the Bebop "style" [i.e., Clifford Brown, Dizzy, Parker, et al].....If you need to learn Bebop, as Jaco said, you gotta learn the "heads"...Do you know who wrote "Donna Lee" by chance??? I'd be interested in your answer....

One thing you need to understand was that Miles' playing underwent many changes between his start with "Bird" in the 40's and his "Second Great Quintet" with Hancock, Shorter et al...in the 60's Miles wanted to transcend "style": Except perhaps Dorham [in his mid-60's Blue Note sessions] the other players you cited had only one specific "sound", or, "style"...Trust me, if you try to play Dizzy/Bird/Bud "licks" over the changes to "Dolores", "Sorcerer", or "ESP", you will sound out of place...

Ron Carter was called "Checkpoint Charlie" because the guys in the band could always rely on him to indicate those structural "signposts".....And, Hancock and Carter spent countless hours playing "1 on 1" [as well as sessions on Blue Note, etc.] to develop that "E.S.P."; no magic, just lots of hard work.....It's a rare thing to find with players these days...

Probably not everyone knows this interesting tidbit. During the performances of this remarkable quintet, Miles would communicate countless shifts in the music, tempo, feel, dynamics, with the use of little melodic codes. That's what enabled them to seamlessly coordinate the metamorphic development of the improvisations. I really believe this to be the height of western civilization in terms of spontaneous creation.
