This is Charlie Rouse!
By: FredGuadalupe. on 03 Sep 08, 07:09:44
correct me if i'm wrong but out there somewhere is an interview with the legend John Coltrane, an innovator of improvisational free form jazz, and when asked about what it was like to perform with monk he replied something to the effect of "he is truly the hardest to follow and you find yourself struggling to keep up with him." just paraphrasing. but i found that shocking until i went and listened to monk. he is a true genius and virtuoso!!
By: clewisfan. on 18 Aug 08, 18:04:50
this is definitely charlie rouse. coltrane died in 1967. besides, charlie rouse was essentially monk's standard tenor player. even without knowing what he looks like, his sound is unmistakable.
By: xHUZZAHx. on 18 Aug 08, 00:37:01
why isn't coltrane playing?
By: clewisfan. on 05 Aug 08, 04:47:04

By: bigelvin22. on 09 Jul 08, 19:04:20
totally agree with you about rouse - some other great musicians had a tendecy to play over monk - charlie always played around what monk was doing - he had great ears

Gotta get me a big ole gold pinky ring!
By: arenae2. on 02 Jul 08, 20:36:56
Legendary..... certainly a must for not only jazz lovers, but musicians and peers of every genre...... definitely worth storing in your collections!!!!!!
By: drummerob92. on 01 Jul 08, 10:53:54
definitely my favorite composition of monk
By: pnebenzahl. on 30 Jun 08, 06:55:13
Rouse was Monk's "working" horn player, Coltrane was a star on his own, and, of course,m with Miles, so Monk and Trane had little time to work together. Their collaboration was brilliant, but Trane was built for Dizzy, Bird and Miles to shape. Rouse was MADE for Monk.
By: pnebenzahl. on 30 Jun 08, 06:50:55
Well, that recording from the Five Spot with Johnny Griffin on tenor is pretty cool! But Rouse owned Monk's book, it's true.

One day I'm gonna learn and master this song on guitar.

This song is the reason I bought the Monk CD "Genius of Modern Music". My grandmother's name was Ruby. Its a special name to me and the first time I heard this song I was truly touched. So I had to have the CD. I had to hear this song! Sounds corny but.....oh well...Ive always loved Monk and this is one of his absolute best songs. THANK YO for sharing the video. He means so much to me.

Sheeet, I need me a pinky ring! Magic Fingers
By: indigoba. on 08 Apr 08, 07:49:23
I strongly agree. As much as i like Monks solo stuff, and when he worked with Coltrane for instance, still it somehow isn't Monk without Charlie Rouses sax. Kind of like Paul McCartney without John Lennon or Simon without Garfunkel or Chuck D without Flava Flav something like that :)
By: danigramm. on 07 Apr 08, 14:31:00
But Charlie Rouse was brilliant. Very underrated if you ask me. Remember he is playing with Thelonious, as you said, A Genius. Charlie Rouse FTW
By: indigoba. on 27 Mar 08, 16:57:00
Monk was a genius
