How to band a baby pigeon

This is the way I put leg bands on my baby pigeons. I do it between 5-7 days of age. When pulling the back toe through you have to make sure you don't force it if the little claw gets caught on the inside of the band.

i dont have to use a tooth pick and can band babies at 2-3 weeks, i just banded 5.. without hurting any of them.. i know a trick.. lol :)

They are from the American Racing Pigeon Union. It's a national Pigeon club. But I get mine through the store Seigel's Pigeons. They do sell some bands you can put your address and phone number on but they are close banded. Meaning you put them on your birds and they are permanent.

It's nice being able to start at anytime but I do try to start in the spring around March. But this year with moving to the new house everything got messed up. I don't rescue offically but I couldn't say no to those abandonded and hurt babies. I breed and sell, but I've cut back on my budgies and such for my wedding pigeon release I want to do.

I'd love to breed all year round, I miss the chicks in the winter, they actually managed to slip one past me this year, I don't know how it avoided being swapped for a wooden egg, Maybelle is just fledging now! So do you do rescues or breed and sell them? I don't race my birds, I show them occasionally.

With the good weather here you can breed year round. And since I don't race I don't have to follow a schedule. Yeah, depending on the species I only allow 2-3 clutches per year. They parents need to rest after having babies.

I have hand raised pigeons and it works better if you have a large syringe (like for horses) and cut off the tip so its wide enough for the baby to fit its beak in, then use a cloth to to cover it and put a slit in the cloth. fill it in reverse with the baby's food (Katee is great for all ages of babies, just hatched to right as the learn pecking) stick the baby's beak in the slit of the clotha and they will slurp it up!!! if you notice, the Parents do NOT stick their beak in the baby's...

If it's a wild dove like a mourning dove you should call a wild life rehaber. But if it's just a pigeon you may want to try to feed it, but it's not easy. Being that its so young you have to keep it warm around 90 degrees. That's the most important thing. I recommend you find someone that knows how to take care of baby birds. But just so you know I use Exact handfeeding formula that you can get at Pet Supermarket.
