Saw them live in Oslo i 1989 and they were absolutely brill. Saw them again after The Second Coming album in about 95 and they were absolute shite. But when this came out they were one of my absolute favourite bands. Back when indie was indie and not some hollow corporate marketing brand.

I'm thinking of being able to replicate the shape of any relatively complex object (a skull keeps popping into my head for some reason) at least to the point of it being recognizable. I think a 100 x 100 grid would be about the bare minimum you could get away with without actually having to make objects with it's low resolution in mind.

Actually, they all have mutual respect for eachother. Girlbros (aka wendy'n lisa) is very successful on their own and that's what they set out to do. Last fall Prince had 2 shows at First Ave. in Minneapolis (where purple rain was filmed) and he flew Wendy in to play with him for both nights....and she happily got on a plane a flew in for the special performances. Any interviews with Girlbros express nothing but love for Prince.

some great WR, just out of the very early miles-without-miles period. alphonse mouzon is a bad funky cat, dom um romao gets pretty enthusiastic, miroslav vitous changes from upright to a sonic blue fender p in the middle of the song, and the room is cluttered with stuff. just great!

They certaintly didn't "squander" their talent because they made an album or two somebody didn't like. Their raison d'ete was a changing ensemble, hence, with new precussion, drums, and bass every so often, the music naturally evolved in different directions. This concept harkens back to Shorter's beginnings with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Art constantly changed the mix to bring in new players to revive the sound or alter the musical dimensions.

From an interview I heard with Miroslav Vitous, I think he sounds very proud of the way he claims to have avoided making mainstream music for people to 'tap their foot to' but he came out with 'Magical Shepherd' in 1976 and when I heard that album, I couldn't believe it was him. I laughed at how cheesy it sounded, even compared to some later Weather Report stuff.

Well I don't get the rock star comparison in that I don't know what exactly that means. I think the early band had three tremendous writers/players in Vitous, Shorter, Zawinul, and by the mid seventies there was just too much Zawinul. Adding to that dynamic was the fact that the keyboard became the dominant instrument of that time and Zawinul had this wall of instruments. It also marked the band's move away from an improvisational approach to more formated style compositions. That's what did it.

You know you're right, back in the seventies they were the premier band winning all those Downbeat awards. And I'm not saying that after 1974 there isn't any great music that they made. Think your going a little too far there. Zawinul did some really breakthrough things with electric keys and really pushed the technology forward. Its true that a lot of those sounds didn't hold up over time, but Palladium; Black Market; Teen town; Havona; Cucumber Slumber; Mysterious Traveler. C'mon, man. That's smoking hot stuff.

You are so right man, Sweetnighter was the last of their great music. I didn't know that until a long time after. My older brother played Black Market for me when I was in high school and it killed me. It got me interested, and I started going back and found all the great stuff they already did. Heavy Weather and everything after I just couldn't listen to. What a shame for their great talents to be squandered like that. I think it was Zawinul because if you listen to Wayne's music now...wow!

Sure I met Wayne Shorter and Joe Zawinul, also Mccoy Tyner, John Patitucci, Peter Erskine, John McLaughlin, Jaco Pastorious,Benny Maupin, Joe Lovano, Stanley Clarke, Herbie Hancock, and other less famous. I live in NYC and in the Summer there are a lot of jazz concerts and events. Also I've been listening since I was 15 years old and went to concerts with my older brother and uncle. It's the greatest art form that is truly American...it's our greatest contribution to the arts!

You're right and if you read Zawinul and his days with Cannonball they had no money. I think that after a long time making little money, (and being famous!), they just went more commerical. That's why Wayne Shorter's new quartet is so exciting! Listen to" Breaking the Sound Barrier" I saw them play a few months ago and they're incredible. Wayne is an inspiration. He's in his seventies and still breaking new ground in his music! WR lost a lot after 74' you can only pick a few pieces after that.

I like some of their funk. Mysterious Traveller isn't bad, but they got more and more tacky from '74 onwards. It's like the chicken and the egg situation really. Do you make music that appeals to the mainstream of today and get the money - or make music that won't get much money but will still sound fresh in 30 years time? Miroslav did the right thing really, but his 'Magical Shepherd' album springs to mind.

Zawinul comes across as difficult to me as well, and I get the impression from reading Shorter's book and listening to the later albums of WR that his collaboration with Wayne suffered as well. Wayne hardly plays and writes very little on their later work, while Zawinul kept amassing this arsenal of keyboards. if you listen to the Wayne Shorter quartet now, I don't think there's a band making more innovative music. I wish WR would have kept it going a little longer instead of changing to funk.

Although my last band were unsigned and didn't do music like this, I can understand the sitation between Zawinul and Vitous by my experiences with band members. After a while, Zawinul wanted to go in a funk direction (Like me), which (in terms of commercialism) did WR alot of favours, (which it did us too), but one member couldn't keep up with it (Vitous & the singer from my old band). I was in the middle, because there was a member who was very difficult (like Zawinul comes across to me).
