Thanks a lot for your reply. I have looked at some books and most don't seem to go into much detail about how to draw lines. That this is the most important factor makes sense though. I've ordered one book now for starters, which seems to provide that, called "The Sumi-e Book" by Yolanda Mayhall. I'll see how useful this will prove, but in any case I'm happy to have your excellent videos to learn from. Cheers again.

hi, ernstsonu, welcome to sumi-e world I think 1.5 cm in diameter, 4 cm for the length of hair is good for beginners. I have started with this size and still using. "watercolor" brush's hair is harder than sumi-e one. It might be difficult to bend a brush hair, to get gradatinon in sumi-e.

hi, cuabi, thanks for the Q. it's really good help for me to get more knowledge about this flower. This orchid's botanical name is "Cymbidium goeringii ". and English name in dictionary is Goering cymbidium. Does it make sense??? This is called "Shun-Ran" in JPN, means Orchid in Spring litterary along with Chinese Charactor. Therefore, I thought it's called Orchid in English.. I checked photo of both orchid and cynbidium, and found myself wrong. anyway, this flower is Cymbidium goeringii :D

hi, ticklememonet, thanks. I use sumi stick, griding on sumi stone. A bottled ink is ok, but little too black for me. and the scent of sumi when griding is enjoyable. An arc shape is maintained with the appropreate water in brush hair! please try :)

How to Draw Clouds in Sumi-e

Clouds is one of difficult for sumi-e to depict. Because sumi-e has no white ink. The most white is the paper color which means draw nothing. So, in sumi-e, shading part is drawn, this is like sculputure process.
