this is kind of a two-part reply to you and DR117. the return stroke of lightning--the bright bolt and flash-- does occur at the speed of light. However, what you're seeing before the main flash are leaders, which come down from the cloud seeking the path of least resistance. When it is found at the ground, the charge actually goes back from the ground to the cloud, completing the circuit. However, that last part is at the speed of light, so it appears instantaneous. Or so I think ;)

Sorry, but Federer DOES NOT use a western grip. It's in between a semi-western/eastern. The western grip can cause problems on low balls, but really any topspin forehand with feel creates similar problems. He just times it perfectly in that situation. The idea of Fed not working hard is ridiculous, he got to the semis in Australia with mono. You have to work damn hard for that.

Hmmm I still respectfully disagree because unless I really saw his life and stasticially how many hours he practiced and played tournaments, your source of information could be a lie. No offense, I just find it hard to believe that he didn't work hard for this skill. He is no doubt amazing, but what you're telling me is that this person is so good that he didn't even practice to beat these people. That's incredulous. If you give me hard core evidence then I'll agree with you.

responding to lowwshay... good point, but you don't have to marry your forehand grip. Many people [including Federer] get around the problems w/ western by using different forehand grips at the right time. So you can get the topspin+height of western with all the versatility of an eastern.

Did you know that Federer HATES practice? He was kicking ass without practice. The only difference was he wasn't as consistent with his results and he was mentally weaker. He actually skipped practice sometimes. Federer's skill is all talent. It just took some work to bring it out. And you can't play like Federer if you just work hard. Some of the stuff he has (like his forehand) was self taught and pure talent. Nobody taught him to hit a forehand like that, and he has the best forehand ever.

federer didnt play incredible or least to his full potential,especially before the first rain break he played it safe like he had everything to lose and nadal played like he had nothing to lose-thats why the result became the way they played.now the pressure will be on nadal,he may be crowned world no1 today,but for how long...only time will tell i guess.we will see what he has achieved when he turns 27

I respectfully disagree with CASPER if the person in question actually wants to play like Roger works extremely hard for to play at his level. Like any tennis player on tour, you have to earn your way to play at such a high level especially those at least in the top 30 of the pro tour, Mens' or Womens'. There is such thing as talent but talent pales in comparison with hard work.

You cant teach this kind of tennis its pure natural ability. Federer is a Legend, classy and graceful when playing. He doesnt need to just depend on power. Pleasure to watch, the fact he is dam sexy with it all adds to the over all experience. 100/100 in my book
