You can tell I'm no fan of the drums! Well, at least not the way drums are typically played. How do you describe the sound a drum makes, other than "beating" or perhaps "thumping"? "Drumming" of course works, but not in a sentence like "...kick the drum drummer ... off the stage!" Maybe "drum assailant"? And I should add as well, throw the drum set off behind him! ;-) I'm just kidding, I do respect anybody who's a good musician. Except for banjo pickers, of course! ;-) [continued...]

there's a difference between beating the drums and playing the drums. when you beat the drums you just pound the pure fire out of them without any sense of rythym or timing. when you play the drums...you make music with it as the drummer (my friend Mike Kennedy) does. i respect your opinion about not blending bluegrass with country...but you have to have something that will attract people who don't dig bluegrass so that maybe they will get into bluegrass. I think that's what Ricky did here.

I'm sorry, steelplayer, I didn't mean to imply that your uncle isn't good at what he does, or any other top instrumentalists in Nashville. You don't get there by being merely good, you have to be the best! My point was that I don't personally care for the Nashville sound combined with bluegrass, I like more of a pure bluegrass style band. That's why I began my comment with "If I ever had to do this..." And you can't deny that those instruments do beat, twang and whine! To each his own...

That steel player happens to be my uncle. And he aint a whiner. He's one of the top steel players in Nashville. The rest of the band did an exceptional job on this. Ricky didnt have no slack pickers. Terry told me when he played steel for Ricky, that he made them pick, and they were dang good too!

If I ever had to do this I'd first kick the drum beater and the electric guitar twanger and the pedal steel whiner off the stage! Those instruments don't belong with bluegrass. You need a fiddle, banjo, mandolin, acoustic guitar, and a bass fiddle. Other than that, this was pretty decent a performance, and a lot faster than I'm used to!

Ricky Skaggs with Bruce Hornsby, and the Levon Helm Band were both at Merlefest in April. You should check out that festival if you like this music. The Cheiftains were there with Ricky Skaggs, Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, Vassar Clements, Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Tony Rice and a whole bunch of people 4 years ago. It was one of the best shows of my life!

A lot of people don't know it, but the mountain clogging is largely the result of the Celtic influence of Irish stepdancing. The Irish, Scots, and Welsh settled heavily inot the Appalchian Mountains. I have some Scots-Irish blood in my family bloodline.

Two of my favorite instruments to listen to are the Uilleann pipes and the banjo. I finally heard some tunes combing bluegrass and Celtic and loved them. By the way, the Appalachian mountain music, from which bluegrass is derived in great part, is a variation of Celtic music, as many from Ireland, Scotland, and Wales settled in Appalachia.

I was really joking with my last comment. Clearly, Skaggs has a lot of natural talent. Whether it developed most in Tennessee or Kentucky is pretty much a moot point. I do find it funny that Skaggs talks about being a Kentuckian when he apparently lived there for such a short time. Still, there are lots of great bluegrassers from Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina.

I think you missed my point. I was saying that the INaccuracy of radiometric dating makes it completely suspect so those who use it to say there is no God really don't have a leg to stand on. Well, being a bluegrass musician of several years, and being inspired by jazz, blues, swing, country, rock, and a host of other music styles. Bluegrass seems to me to be the only music that has retained most of it's heritage and comes purely from the heart.
