I have never cared for the "tradition". What animals do you keep? I have 3 California Kings which my husband is terrified even though they are nonvenomous. I can not believe that in today's society this kind of animal butchering is still allowed. Not only are rattlesnake round-ups cruel and inhumane, they are also very destructive to the environment. Habitats are thoughtlessly destroyed. Even if it has no prior experience with snakes, it probably has an instinctive idea that snakes are dangerous. Humans, I believe, tend to instinctively avoid stuff like snakes and spiders even without being told they're dangerous. Also, the rattle and the coloring of the snake are warnings.

Thats strange. Why do some snakes have more venom than others? The mojave I read is one of the worst to get bit by. I also read not all rattlesnakes shake their rattles warning others to get away. Sometimes they just strike if your in the wrong place at the wrong time. For example, your walking in the woods, sit on a log to rest then BAM! Your bit. The snake was behind the log and saw you.

I do alot of herping and handle alot of nonvenomous snakes I find and almost never get a bite. Never had a desire to attempt to free handle a venomous snake. I'm sure I could, but I think 8 vials of Crofab at 8k a pop, loss of digits, and a trip to the emergency room to explain why I decided to pick up a rattlesnake isn't worth the 'wouldn't it be neat' factor.

Not only would I caution kids to not handle poisonous snakes, I would hope that they avoid them completely. On the other hand I am also not arrogant enough to pass any judgment on "professionals" that handle snakes for a living. If they need equipment, they know when to use it. Eastern diamondbacks, from my experience, are fairly calm even when bothered like this one. Some snakes require equipment and some dont. I've used hooks on nonvenomous and freehanded venomous before. You just need to know the snake your handling. He obviously knows this snake and what hes doing with it.

ok here it is, statistically, about 90% of people that get bitten by snakes are male, ages 18-25, drunk and for some reason have tattoos. But the most convincing piece of evidence is that most of them are bitten on the for arm, henceforth one would conclude that they were being dumbasses and trying to pick them up. That would be a dead rattlesnake if I could get to a shotgun. We are overrun by these SOB's. We kill up to 8 a year in our yard in South Georgia. We can't keep a dog. They get bit. You are on constant guard while working in the yard and garden. I am terrified by them and hate them. If you feel sorry for them or want to preserve them, feel free to come and get them.

Wonderful rattler encounter and a wonderful video! Thank you for teaching about the value of wildlife and for protecting your wildlife and land from the human scourge that is killing Florida. We have the same problem in NC and it is so hard to convince people that animals and land are important in their natural state--all most can see is $ be it for the land or from selling the animal into the pet trade or killing the animal for it's skin--so hard is our job but we must do it at all costs.

Contrary to popular belief, these snakes arent very aggresive. If you watch some videos of snake handlers in the wild, you will see they walk all around the snake and until they almost step on it all it will do is rattle its rattle. As well, they wont rattle unless they KNOW your aware of them. If you just walk by them about 10 feet+ from them they wont rattle. But if you start walking up to one, they will. I wouldnt be to worried, but be careful.

can someone help me im into biking but im scared shitless of rattlesnakes and im building in a coulee and i want to know how i can find one before he finds me. i am travelling real fast and hitting jumps etc so once i hear a rattle it is likely i cant stop but im looking to build new jumps but im not sure were there is less rattlesnakes since i dont want an encounter and not destroy there home. and how hard is it to wake a hibernating rattlesnake?
