Great video. I don't have a food processor, which means I had to use a masher. It probably isn't ground to the texture and consistency that would be preferable; however, in spite of this, the hummus still tastes great. Thank you Dede!

You would need to soak them over night and then boil them in a big pot with a tsp of salt until they are tender. THen drain them and follow the recipe. Good LUCK :)

I usually use the canned water since it already has the flavor instead of regular water. I drain the can but not all the way and since I like to add lemon juice in the processor and omit the tahini til after its blended, I dont really need as much water. I also put olive oil in the processor since it helps make it more smooth. I mix in the tahini by hand once its done and also use the parsley for design but instead of paprika or cayenne, I use Zumac which has similiar color but the best flavor!

great recipe! i have a question though...what if you wanted to start out with dry chick peas instead of canned? would you soak them for a while and grind them up, or soak, dry cook, grind? and what about putting some olive oil in the mix instead of on top?

I've always hesitated with humus recipes but the yogurt in this one seems to make it a much better dip and I'm willing to try this easy and healthy recipe for a change of pace with my dinner. You explain things well and make recipes easy to follow. Thank You. pt Oct. 01, 2008

As someone who had cooked many chick peas I can state that they are a pain to prepare until you perfect the process. In my area the dried chick peas are about 10-15% of the price of canned onesso it is worth it.

I make the hummus in a larger quantity each time, divide it into several individual seal-able plastic containers, and keep it frozen in the refrigerator until needed. It will keep for several weeks or even months that way.

How about if you blend a whole lemon with the rest of it in the blender ? Would it be too zesty ?
By: DarkOsirisRose. on 15 Sep 08, 11:17:32
thats so legit, im gonna make some. i love hummus. she can cook and shes hot too haha.
By: dedemed. on 13 Sep 08, 10:08:59
You can store hummus in the refrigerator for about a week to 10 days I would say. If you purchase it then it has more preservatives and probably lasts longer. But it is so cheap to make it fresh, give it a try :)
By: dadluvsu. on 12 Sep 08, 23:13:27
If you are interested in economizing, start with dry chickpeas (about half the price). Soak one cup of the chick peas in water to cover over night in fridge. Boil them over low heat next day, after changing the water, until soft.Keep some of the water to add to the processor to soften the final product. Best regards, dadluvsu in Thailand

Well-explained recipe! Curious, what would be the average shelf life of the hummus based on the ingredients used in this recipe. Is refrigeration necessary? I've never noticed expiration dates on store bought hummus.

I LOVE HUMMUS!!!

Excellent. Thank you for posting this recipe. In my variation, I omit the mint and parsley, and top with 1/4 cup of pan-toasted pine nuts.

I WILL 100% COSIGN FOR THIS RECIPE! I have always purchased my hummus from the store but never again! I am vegan so I used soy yogurt and I am eating live/raw food this week so I made three batches. 1 plain, 1 with sun dried tomatoes and 1 with sun dried peppers soooo good! I didn't add the salt, mint, nor the lemon but it came out really good! Thanks so much for the recipe =-)
