As for the third world, well; those nations are more or less given in to animals' game reserves.
By: 7olusegun. on 10 Oct 08, 16:06:16
Nay I aint agree with you that US is loosing in any way. US also conduct Nuclear Fusion researches (e.g. in the Princeton large Torus (TOKAMAK style) and also photothermonuclear fusion (with the use of concentrically arranged multiple high powered lasers). It also is an invaluable contributor to the technical and economic development of ITER (southern France). The larger the TOKAMAK reactor, the more likely fusion reaction is more sustained, hence Nations coming together to produce this one.

A proposed design is to use fusion simply as a neutron source, rather than an energy source, to generate radioactive material that can then be used in a fission plant.
By: BobMcGee123. on 09 Oct 08, 05:01:03
The energy released is largely contained in the kinetic energy of fast moving neutrons. Various forms of radiation of radiation are released, but it is the fast moving neutrons from the deuterium/tritium reaction that poses severe problems. While fusion is not an inherently radioactive process bombardment by neutrons will cause other materials to become radioactive (as well as ruin the structural integrity of it).

This is why the United States is loosing. We will not even consider this type of research, just "Drill Baby Drill!" is our answer. The rest of the world will take the lead and the United States will be relegated to no more than a backward third world nation stuck in their superstitions.
By: zemaken. on 08 Oct 08, 18:33:02
I remember that just combining alot of hydrogen would work. Anyway when fusion happens I think beta particles are released. These arn't really harmful, just that aluminum can stop them. With gamma particles (I think they are called), you need 1 foot of iron to stop them :P
By: BobMcGee123. on 07 Oct 08, 03:43:12
What theories do you think need to be changed? The only problem I can see is that classical thermodynamics doesn't typically take the conversion of mass into energy into account, but that doesn't require changing any scientific theories.
By: seventhspawn. on 06 Oct 08, 14:39:36
I do agree with you, my friend. If I may say so however, I am no conspirator of any sort, but through my years of studying the sciences, I will say that every once in awhile, human beings develop a breakthrough in science, which changes a lot of pre-established assumptions and theories, and it would be against the very ideals of objectivity, open-mindedness, and science, not to change those theories accordingly.
By: BobMcGee123. on 05 Oct 08, 16:46:20
No. Think of it like this: in an internal combustion engine, it takes a substantial amount of energy to generate the combustion process; in a diesel engine the fuel/air mixture is compressed, requiring a lot of work to be done onto the mixture, before combustion takes place. The second law then takes over and says that the heat of combustion cannot be 100% turned into work, there is always loss, but the heat of combustion generates more energy output than input, for a net energy gain.
By: stevebd1. on 05 Oct 08, 00:55:59
Due to E=mc^2, all the machine is doing is converting ~0.6% of the deuterium/tritium mass into energy, so no energy is being 'created', it just so happens that the energy released is (in principle) greater than the energy required to release it. Also, those figures don't currently include for the energy circulating the electomagnets but this is discounted as it's envisioned that superconductive magnets will eventually be used that will be much more efficient.
By: TheStick14639. on 04 Oct 08, 18:43:41
I read somewhere that this ITER machine will generate 10 times the energy that is put in to it. Doesn't that violate one of the laws of thermodynamics? (I'm not trying to be cynical, just trying to understand something) If someone has any information about it, I would appreciate it.
By: rustygates. on 03 Oct 08, 20:17:31
Ah, so i guess the thermal energy carried by the kinetic energy of the neutrons is much, much less than 150 million, a temp enough to turn water into high pressure, heated steam. heating water with 150 million would turn the water into a plasma. But even though the torus is a vacuum, cant the plasma also radiate its 150 million C heat in the form of electro-magnetic radiation? like the sun? The only way to counter that is with very reflective material on the walls...but its 150 million C..:(.
By: BobMcGee123. on 03 Oct 08, 10:48:03
Did that clarify anything? These are really good questions, I asked my physics professors the same things, and they also had a difficult time providing satisfactory answers. Plus, I may need to re-check some of my own assumptions, but I believe what I've told you was spot-on.
By: BobMcGee123. on 03 Oct 08, 10:43:06
Energy is radiated from the sun in the form of electro-magnetic radiation. This is the 'heat' that you feel. The conditions of the experimental fusion reactors is such that all matter at 150 million C is contained, and the vast majority of the energy that leaves the Plasma is manifested in the kinetic energy of the fast-moving neutrons. As I understand it, the space between the plasma field and the walls is a vacuum, and therefore convective heat transfer is subsequently eliminated.
By: rustygates. on 03 Oct 08, 07:12:22
Yes, but even though the plasma never touches the walls, heat is radiated from the plasma, like the sun, the sun is not touching earth, but its heat is radiated to the earth which is 100 000's of km's away. So if you were standing next to a plasma, or any matter next to a plasma which is 150 million deg C, lets say u were 1 m away from it, you would get incinerated by 150 million deg c, so how come the magnets which are next to the plasma dont heat up to 150 million as well?
By: BobMcGee123. on 03 Oct 08, 06:49:06
Once heat transfer into the lithium is completed another heat exchanger transfers heat from the lithium to water, generating super heated steam and subsequently being passed through a steam turbine to produce electricity.
By: BobMcGee123. on 03 Oct 08, 06:46:32
The plasma is maintained at the temperature of the sun but never touches the walls of the toroidal reactor. The energy out is mostly manifested in the kinetic energy of the fast moving neutrons. These are allowed to exit the plasma field and interact with a molten lithium heat exchanger. The purpose of the molten lithium heat exchanger is to prevent other materials from becoming radioactive from the bombardment of the fast moving neutrons and to breed more deuterium/tritrium.
By: rustygates. on 03 Oct 08, 04:16:37
What i dont get is, if the plasma is heated, and stays at 150 Million degrees to work on earth, the temp at the core of the sun, how the hell isnt the magnets around it incinerating in an instant? the magnets contain the plasma, but it doesnt contain the heat being radiated from the plasma. And the reaction comes to a big crash? Thats like saying u can block ANY amount of heat with magnets..doesnt even make sense. unless the amount of coolant is extreme. Enormously insanely extreme.

-wants someone to do something- If we'd implement Nucelear Fusion then we wouldn't need petrol, right? We could have big stations where you connect the car, or connect the car at home. The electricity could be just about free, the cars wouldn't add to the greenhouse effect and so on. Now, when it comes to airplanes, boeing and such, thats where we begin to get some problems...
By: hurley1516. on 29 Sep 08, 14:24:30
Thats what i mean, as the economic sistem is nowadays it needs war, sad but true. In the other hand a great deal of this need for wars comes from the need of petrol and if there where more energia sources this wouldnt happen. Its like a vicius circle, nothing will change until something changes :p
By: brunishka. on 29 Sep 08, 10:33:32
why will it take so long for nuclear fusion to be implemented? why can't it's implementation be accelerated given our climate and energy crisis? anyone know the answer to that? thx.
By: Dojan5. on 29 Sep 08, 08:59:24
Nope. If USA would spend all their money on Nuclear Fusion instead of weapons etc the worlds economy would pretty much crash. If all war ended the same would happen.
By: hurley1516. on 28 Sep 08, 15:27:00

ahm hello... first these black holes can only be generated by particle accelerators such as the LHC in Genf. They might be produced there but they are that unstable that they wouldnt exist even one second! And hehe risks... everything has his own risks. Nuclear fission is even more dangerous. Think about that. Before writing such crap as you did, gather more information or be a scientist!
