This Camera is a very well built product. It looks and feels strong, just like a proper DSLR. The zoom is awesome.....better than carrying around 3 or for different lenses. Picture quality is second to non, very good. All the features on this camera are very good from the anti shake, face detection and film modes. I far recomend this camera for pro or learner, it has features of a budget range DSLR havn't got, yet i feels like a top range DSLR.

one word of advice: go easy on the mode selector, mine gave way after two weeks and the guy said it was a common problem. when you adjust it with your thumb, make sure you turn it from side to side and you don't actually push it up is what the guy said (it does stick out a bit).

i wont keep going on about the canon s51s on your fuji s8000 review. but what i will say is that whenever i take it out with me it's for the main reason i bought it - so i can use the 12x zoom lens. but most of the time the s51s suffices with the wide angle setting too. and if it didn't for some reason,i'd just whip out my trusty ixus900ti which i always carry with me to see if that'd do the trick :)

Mike, good point, but I always show coverage examples on the full reviews at the cameralabs. com website and dicuss the focal range in detail, so take a look at them before buying. That said, I'm with wombat on this and prefer having the wide angle facilities. After all, you can always crop an image to 'get closer' but you can't zoom out any wider.

the whole reason i got the s8100fd camera was to get in a lot closer - or so i thought. but with seeing 12x on the canon and 18x on the fuji,anyone not knowing and wanting a good zoom would go for the fuji,when in actual fact it's hardly nearer than the canon. also, i'm not keen on super wide angle (like 27mm or 25mm).they might squeeze more image in,but they distort verticles - rather like a fish eye lens obviously not as extreme.

They are not a con; the Fuji and other super-zooms like the Panasonic FZ18 start at a much wider angle equivalent than the S5 IS (27-28mm vs 36mm) - so although at telephoto you do not see a lot more you get a much better wide-angle.

I have been looking for F40fd and F50fd. I don't know which is better. Megapixels are same to me, but 8 megapixel files doesn't take so much space then 12 megapixel files. But noise reduction is better in F50 and their noise levels aren't not so different. I hope that F100fd is complete differet class then F50 in photo qualty and buttons layout, becouse I have big hand and I don't want to hit wrong buttons all the time.

I agree - the F50fd is on a level playing field with most compacts these days - I'd say none has the edge for low light work, although the Fuji can produce some natural-looking results with its flash for nearby subjects. Note Fuji has just announced the F100fd, coming in March...

I think the f31 was probably best compact camera released but of course Fuji had to go and stop making them to force you to buy the f50fd. Does anyone know whether the f50 or f40 is better for gigs in low light for pictures and videos? Or even another camera?

I feel it's a bit deceptive to say this camera doesn't perform as well as the F30 at higher ISO settings. If you lower the resolution of the F50fd to 6mp. The noise level is virtualy identical to the F30 at 800, 1600 & 3200 ISO.

It depends on how the F50fd 'bins' its pixels. You may need to reduce the resolution a lot to see any measurable decrease in noise. I certainly wouldn't buy if you're counting on this...

Thanks for the response on the last question. What about video editors? I've tried a few programs and all the AVI files that I try and load into an editor to adjust brightness levels and such comes up with an error. "AVI not supported" or something similar, for Premiere and Vegas 7. What would I be able to use as a video editor? Thanks!

Hi tmbutler - I think we've already spoken on the Cameralabs forums! The video mode is very good, although like all digital cameras, the video quality isn't quite up to a camcorder, and the sound is much worse. This is the same for all digital camera movie modes though. If you value widescreen video, you might also want to check a Panasonic compact. I suggest trying it in a shop with your own memory card, to see if the quality is good enough for what you want.

Hi Freetobecrazy, congrats on your F31fd! Does the face detection work well? I've not tested the F31fd, but if it works the same way as the F30, the Auto 1600 mode just means the camera automatically selects the sensitivity, but won't go higher than 1600. Similarly, the Auto 400 mode restricts the maximum to 400 ISO to avoid any noisy surprises! PS - sorry it's taken a while to respond. Hi Freetobecrazy, the F30 doesnt have optical stabilisation like the Panasonic cameras, but it does have a mode which turns up the sensitivity to allow faster exposures and avoid camera shake. Increasing the sensitivity does reduce the picture quality, but as youll see in the review at Camera Labs, its not too bad.

Every site I've seen says 1.5 fps for 3 frames (DPReview, Steve's Digicams, Imaging Resource among others). The manual that comes with the camera says 1.5 fps. My own experience with the camera is 1.5 fps. The specs from Fuji's own site says 1.5 fps. The site where you got your info is wrong. What site is that?

All this is true although iso 400 is usable. Actually among non DSLR cameras this is one of the best at higher iso's. If you want low noise at high iso's a DSLR is a must. The pop up flash has never been a issue with me. Damping with your finger is unnecessary. I've popped it at least 1000 times without issue. The strap holder does not get in the way at all so I don't know what you're talking about. I now own a DSLR but still use this camera occasionally.

No it is limited to 1.5 fps for 4 frames total or 1.1 fps for 40 frames. Here's the spec sheet info for continuous shooting. ? "Top 4" : up to 4 frames (1.5 fps) ? "Final 4": last 4 frames before releasing the shutter button (1.5 fps) ? Long-period continuous shooting: up to 40 frames (1.1 fps max.)

With my s9xxx the exposure lasts only 30 seconds even in "B" mode. I've tried it. This is a well known limitation that has been discussed in the Fuji forums of DPReview. It is to prevent overheating of the sensor.

it does in fact have a 2x digital zoom as well as the focusing aid, when framing your picture press the up direction on the 4 way button surrounding the menu button and this activates the 2x digital zoom!. it also has infinite exposures too, turn to manual or aperture priority and scroll the input wheel all the way out to 30 sec exsposure, then turn the wheel 1 more click and it will change the 30 to B "B" exposures last as long as you hold the exposure button (the one to take pics ;) ) .

The camera is limited to 30 seconds exposure. I do not believe that any of the 9xxx series has digital zoom. I have one that is nearly 3 years old (not UK) and it is limited to 30 sec exposure and has no digital zoom. BTW, digital zoom is pretty useless since it's the same as cropping through post processing. What this camera does have is digital magnification as a focusing aid but this is not digital zoom.

I baught this camera not long ago, was looking for the closest thing to the a DSLR cam, that i could carry around with me easialy. The camera produces very good photos if you just use it right and not trust the Auto mode only. In manual mode i can almost get photos to match Slr quality. I realy recommend buying it...

its preety good for close ups, it depends about the fighter jets, if there stationairy it should be fine but this camera only has a fps of 3, so if there moving you would have to aim ahead of the jet and have good timing. You would need a better camera with a good sports lens to get good photos of jets but it would cost alot.
