You are off base...Dylan never launched his career from liberal causes, therefore he never abandoned them..read his book "Chronicles" or view the interview with ed bradley (60 minutes) on you tube...as far a giving back, the man has written over 600 songs and launched the careers of too many artists to mentions...performs 150 concerts per year at age 67 and no other artists has been scrutinized/criricized more...all the man wanted was to sing his songs..To say all he did is write very good?

I don't usually care much for these re-mix versions, even 'cause, in this case, there was nothing wrong with the original (the whole Blonde On Blonde album is fantastic), but I guess it's OK. I like the idea of showing Dylan's different aspects & personas thru time. The only thing they got wrong is the motorcycle accident bit. It happened in the Woodstock countryside, not in a city street, did it not? I guess it doesn't matter really...Thanks for posting!

I am a young man by Dylan's standards, but I have seen him MANY times and never been disappointed, even when his performance could have been better. like the old blues performers, he never plays or sings a song the same twice. i love his covers of others' music, and van zandt's tune sounds great by him and willie (i've seen them together twice) as well. if you don't like dylan, you probably haven't listened to enough of him, or you just have bad taste. your favorite artist probably LOVES him.

Yes indeed, it in all likelihood goes back to the 19th century. Dylan heard Dave Van Ronk playing it in Greenwich village, and borrowed his arrangement (without asking) for this recording in '62. Van Ronk then had to stop playing it when people accused him of stealing it from Dylan. Then, in '64, the Animals rearranged it into a rock song (possibly after hearing Dylan's version) and ironically he had to stop playing when people accused him of stealing it from The Animals

Yes bob dylan covered this. Yes bob dylan has recorded the best version in my mind. The Animals version is way to overblown to sound really authentic, the organ solos and the whole big vocals and bombastic feel of their versions ruins it. This is only Bob and his acoustic guitar and his rough vocals....this is what the song is meant to sound like. Bob sings it as if this actually happened in his life! This version is by far superior to the Animals version. If you like overblown go with Animals.

I like this song, but it's not a big favourite for me. Some of his greatest songs are not directly political, but I do appreciate the strength it took to write this one, and the fact that he still performs it. The question for me is: does he believe in what he's singing anymore, or is he knocking out the classics just because they're popular? I'd be a little disappointed if he is.
