i once read that karajan wasn't really happy about the way this clip was shot. The instruments are the center of attention and karajan himself is often blurred out or shot frontal (he always wanted to be shot from the side since he thought he looked better). it's interesting for me since i like this clip the most out of all movies he had made.

Karajan takes it at a good clip but remember, 4 of the 5 movements have some form of allegro as their tempo. For me, the proof of how well or poorly this symphony is conducted is the second movement. Karajan does not rush this, he allows time for the full measure of its sweetness and delicacy to emerge.

This movement has always troubled me...it demands a temperament at once superbly refined and savagely discontent. Performances of it, despite being very moving, never seem quite capable of conveying the Beethovenian art--that is, two extremes tempered into an incredibly rich and singular sensation. Kempff still does a very good job, yet I tend to favor the interpretation given by Horowitz for this movement. :)

I was lucky enough to see Dudley perform this piece live, on two occasions. It's fiendishly difficult, and a brilliant parody. He actually attended Oxford University (Magdalene College), on a Music scholarship. The sheet music has been published (by Methuen books), in "The Complete Beyond the Fringe". If you're a very skilled pianist, you could try playing it. But for it to really work, you need to play up the pianist's panic, when he realizes he's trapped & can't get out of it.

Who were these people? How old are you? These "people" came from a time when TV actually had great TV shows on the air. These shows had great comedy, great acting, great dramas. Like what you just saw. Sid Carsar and his cast did live TV shows. They had to write a script every week and do it live. I suggest that you watch more of him on YouTube.

I have listened to his recordings, especially those in which he plays Chopin's nocturnes. He is unsurpassable, but age is very noticeable in the tempo of this performance. I have no doubts his output and style are unrivalled today, but in this recording...mm...time caught up with him. Still, it is very rare to see two giants together in the same performance of a composition--putting Toscanini to conduct while Paderewsky plays Chopin's first. Lovers of the lofty and refined will cherish this.

The first movement is certainly not easy, but less difficult than the second or third movements. My favorite part of his play is the feeling with which he plays. There are times he looks sleepy, but you see other moments of what almost looks like rapture on his face. The subtleties of his play style are amazing and it is the reason he is one of my favorite pianists.
