There was multiple takes to get the final recording perfect. Doesn't mean Portnoys bad at drumming, he just wants to get all the parts the way he hears em in his head. Very common in nowadays music. Though you gotta respect people like Bonham who didn't have the ability to do this and might end up doing 10 takes on a 6 minute song before a good one was used.
