This was done on a BBC radio show probably in 1966-68. If you really wanted to see Jimi at his best; you had to have been at Woodstock when he played Red House; personally I was in awe the whole time. He was married to his guitar, always, and halfway into Red House a string broke on that guitar, that not too many saw, and he didn't even flinch. He just automatically changed up. You never saw it on his face. Nothing. I was sitting next to an amp on the stage, and will never forget it.

Guitars don't go out of tune from bending very easily. Not even SRV's did when he bent 13s like crazy. It went out of tune because of the whammy bar abuse, and he didn't use it much, if at all during this performance. Plus, you can hear the guitar the whole time- it wasn't out of tune.

Background to this. He was on a polite pretty pop show which he despised - see the second joke-lousy solo to Hey Joe - and as soon as he cut loose with Sunshine of Your Love, unrehearsed, they put him off the air and carried on with their Lulu pretty pop music. Unless it was because his guitar had gone way out of tune by then - it often did, because of the way he bent the notes - but I doubt it. That 'Sunshine' performance started brilliantly before the BBC stopped it.

Um maybe you don't understand "major corporations" when I expect to see a blues player, play I expect to hear a story. Not the same main stream stuff from basic off the street guitarist/performers. "Old blues". Again, you can't be a sellout if nobody wants to hear what you're playing. We've all heard 12-bar blues, we've all heard the standards. I'd be willing to bet that those guys have never had a chance to sell out because the world's already heard their flavor of the blues. People don't line up in droves to hear oldies. If anything, that makes him even better than the rest because he's crossed genres, which no matter how you cut it, takes talent. Howling wolf, magic Sam, Freddie King, those guys were blues man, Mayer got popular with pop, and songs like why georgia and your body is a wonderland.
