yea you are the jack ass. two people so far have said it is not influenced by jimi. which it is not. its neils version of the song. not jimi's just because it has a solo and is played with an electric guitar does not mean its automatically influenced by hendrix. there were guitar players before him you know. i love hendrix as much as any body but this is not the same style.

I have to comment on the recent comments. NO, this is not influenced by Jimi Hendrix. Jimi played guitar totally different from Neil. Neils guitar is less refined than Jimi, and more feedback based. Always has been. Which is better. I prefer Neils, but that is subjective. Thus as far as being a cover, it is a cover of Dylan. I would say more of a tribute, but that just sounds better.

wrong. this is based on the way neil plays it. if you know anything about neils music then you would know that this is how he plays. he's not trying to be be jimi and neither is he copying his style, jimi redefined the song and it went from being a folky acoustic number to this. it was and still is a great song, however its played, but even bob plays it jimis way.

Just my opinion and I have nothing to back it up, but I think Dylan is singing about the Great American Dream - the dream of freedom and equality for all, which at the time he wrote it many people (including himself, hence the term "protest singer") saw as being under threat. He chose to sing this song at the DC Civil Rights March in 1963 - you can find a video of it here on youtube.

As someone who saw the original Byrds in '67, I can tell you the Heartbreakers did a great job backing McGuinn, & sounded better than the original group, instrumentally, & hangs right in there vocally, with what Clark & Crosby sounded like along with McGuinn 4 decades ago. It's not a matter of NEED. There is nothing deflating to the artist performing covers. The Beatles did covers that made those songs THEIRS. They actually did Long Tall Sally, Please Mr. Postman, Devil in Her Heart...and others early on. The Stones and Elvis Costello, too. The great ones make great music out of great music - only they do it their way. Do you really think Money was a Barret Strong song after the Beatles got to it? And they beat the crap out of the Isleys Twist and Shout.

I was there at the garden, and to this day, this is one of my all time best live shows. The entire cd rocks-my 3 kids grew up listening to it and after all these years, it still gets major playtime in the house. Also, for anyone who doesn't know, Neil young came on right after Seanad O'connor was booed off the stage. He brought the "air" back down to where it should have stayed with this cover.

i watched this live on pay-per-view and taped it too:)i thought only lou reed, george harrison & roger mcguinn laid eggs. other than those 3, horrible? the exact opposite. not only neil, but stevie wonder, ritchie havens, the o'jays, tom petty, eddie vedder, chrissy hynde, the clancy brothers, sophie b. hawkins were all bloody fantastic. and clapton's "don't think twice" is my humble opinion the best cover of any song period. and i'm not a huge clapton fan. this concert rocks.

This is what Dylan tried to do his music in his Hard Rain period. It's not enough to spit your words with venom. Young captures the real menace by contrasting it with his sweet voice and a guitar that goes from melodic to wrenching. He should do an album of Dylan covers. Watchtower is magnificent. Young is the only artist to have made at least one fabulous record in 5 decades. He is probably the most underrated guitarist around.

Only two things need to be said about this video from the Madison Sq Garden Concert: 1- the song adapts very well to a blues style 2- this has to be one of the greatest displays of singing and guitar playing ever. Its rare to see this kind of magic. This performance comes from the heart. The song was a vehicle for what surely must rank as one of the best live performances ever. Stunning.

I would have to agree. In the documentary I get the feeling that he was kind of arrogant and just had a chip on his shoulder. The the fact of the matter is we were never there behind the scenes and will never know both sides of the story. One thing that really surprised me was when Tom said "All I car about is that the records sell. I don't care how their made, just as long as they sell." This struck me as odd because that almost seems to go against everything that Tom Petty stands for.

I agree, Stan was good and sang really well. He seemed to leave on a bad terms though. Interviews with him sound like he's very bitter, sour grapes kind of stuff.

What a fantastic concert. After seeing it as a teen, years ago, from here in S'pore in a different culture, it certainly opened up a deeper view of american music and culture. I cant begin to say how much I appreciate the man's music now. Also it was a turning point in my life in a positive way regarding music expression. The Pulitzer Prize was JUST given to BOB, the 1st ever for popular music. Deservingly so.

Very good version, but the Richie Havens version (also on YouTube) blows it and the Dylan version)out of the water. Great song, and entirely appropriate for our Bush-ridden times. Can't wait for Bush's license to kill to be revoked.
