Cinebench scores do not vary based on resolution. You can run it at 800x600 or 1600x1200...wont make a difference in rendering time or score. Also I'd hope the Q9300 is faster. Its newer, runs at a higher FSB and a higher clock speed.

Thanks about the PC. It can run OSX86 if I dont use the 15K SCSI drives and just run normal sata drives. PS. The CRT does not have shitty refresh. Its the way the camera is viewing the CRT. Its got rock solid 85Hz refresh at 1600x1200. All CRTs have flicker or scan lines when viewed through a camera.

Huh? The whole thing is a benchmark. Thats what the '1 CPU' and 'x CPU' are for. Those show the single cpu and multicpu performance. Higher numbers are better. Below that area, it has the OpenGL benchmark. Higher Scores are better again. In my video, when it zooms in at the begining, it shows single CPU score of 2827 and multicpu of 10001. OpenGL score of 5380.

Ya because all of our 6 Q6600 boxes we've had running now for nearly a year are just overheating here at work. Yup they are just boiling over. FYI 65C full load temps on stock cooler is well within spec for Intel OR AMD chips. Might sound hot but we're not designed to withstand those kinds of temps. The CPU is. Running it at 55C instead of 65C is not going to do it any favors. Its still going to last an easy 5-10 years or more at those temps. We use our boxes to host VMware clients.

Ya exactly the same speaker they used for the left and right. At first I thought its a mistake but thats the way they are. With the grills on it all looks normal of course and as far as sound goes, you cant really tell. Imaging is still fairly decent considering the size of the speakers. Bass is quite clean and tight since its a sealed cabinet.

Exact same case i have, i find it a bit cramped when using liquid cooling though. I bought it with the intention of using air but ended up using liquid, pretty messy inside as a result :(. Next time around i think one of the lian li armorsuit cases will be my preference. 3x140mm intakes at the front is some insane airflow for the system.

I had a chance to play with a phenom 9500 setup and I was not overly impressed. I found it responsive to day to day tasks but for things like encoding and rendering, it was somewhat slower than the Q6600. Now as for Xeons vs desktop CPUs. A Core2 Quad is very close in performance to a 4 core Xeon - so if there was a way to have dual core2 quads on one board, it would be nearly identical to dual quad xeons.

Thanks man. Also those same people wonder why their system is unstable or does weird stuff. This system was definitly not cheap to put together. I think with all the SCSI stuff in there it came to nearly $1800, so while I did save some money building it compared to any other system that has 15K drives, I did spend time researching and buying parts individually so I guess I paid for it another way :) Either way, if you want quality, you will pay for it somehow :)

Tested noise levels of my box with the front cover open and closed. Note that for standard measurements, you should measure at 1 meter but I measured at a very close 5" because the meter doesnt read below 50db. Moving it to 1m would cause it to register below threshold for much of the testing...

I think my SCSI 15K drives make a slight racket and all the fans in the computer have been upgraded to slightly more noisy but way more reliable Sanyo Denki 38mm full ball bearing fans. They are not as quiet as the antecs but I'm sure these will run until the end of time :) ...but overall I'm very happy with the sound level of the box considering all thats inside (8800GT, SCSI) once the door is closed. I estimate the volume level to be in the mid 40's when measured at 1 meter

Thanks :) ... you know I'm amazed how easily hum can be heard in a small room. The room is 10' by 12' and totally quiet. I recently built a pair of subwoofers and was going to power it with one of my spare amplifiers (SAE or my Soundcraftsmen). Both of the amps produce a very light amount of hum or buzz. In a larger room it would never be heard but I can detect it in the small room so I had to scrap that project. Looks like the room will continue to be a very minimalist setup but I dont mind :)

Amp is a Threhsold SA3, Preamp is a Soundcraftsmen pro-control 3, DAC is an MSB, CD is a Yamaha and network player is a Squeezebox. The speakers at the moment are the modest but amazing Usher S520. I still have my older celestions though :) ... but they are not good enough anymore as my main set of speakers.

Thanks RickArter :) Ya I dont know how much further I can overclock with my DDR2667 valueram but I actually dont even really overclock much. This was mostly a test. I'd probably run the CPU at stock clock. This is my gaming and testing machine. My main rig is a Q6600 box which I've been really happy with. Its based on a P5WDG2-WS Professional board from a couple years back (975X). So ya, if you can run this benchmark, thta would be cool. Its a great test of system performance I find.

Well the single CPU score is way beyond anything I've seen from AMD (overclocked or not) and the multicpu score of just over 1200 is right on par with a standard clock 4 core phenom. Thats still really good considering its a dual core. Even at 3Ghz, it still gets over 500 for single CPU and over 1000 in multi. Thats still very good :)

Wow thats some brand loyalty there :) I usually just go with what gets the job done and have no probs adapting to changes. Example, I didnt mind in vista that things were shuffled around quite a bit. Got used to it quickly. More important for me is availability of software, afterall an OS is useless without software. The ability for me to get the exact hardware I want is important and it helps if I can build it. Also good is available replacement parts if needed - at reasonable prices.

The Qlogic SAN they are using is what they are using for the actual storage so OSX is probably more for administration and creating the share points. Well the Quadra 700 I sold ages ago and moved up to the Quadra 950. The 950 I had for a few years then I got someone who gave me a good offer on it so I sold that. Mind you all the time I had macs, I've also had PCs. After a year, I found someone selling the 9600 for a decent price so I picked it up. The G3 I also picked up and used for a while and then sold it to someone at work who wanted it for their mom. So now I'm left with the 9600 and the G4. I might give away the 9600. Its just too big.

Thanks :) This set of speakes is the nicest of all the ones I have by far! Midrange so detailed and top end so delicate. Bass is quite surprising for such a small speaker. I've never heard any horns but I want to one day. I also want to hear a Fostex based full range setup too once just to see.

Hmm I've never heard the Tiny Dancers but I heard in a review that the little S-520s do a great job of holding their own to much more expensive speakers, but I'm willing to bet that the Tiny Dancers are on another level. I've heard of the Sonus but never seen one in person. I can tell you that from the pictures, it looks beautiful. My goal is one day to build something myself that sounds really nice. I do build stuff from time to time. The best I built so far is based around a Vifa 5.25" and a Vifa 1". Budget drivers but they sound good...Possibly as good or better than the ushers if I sort out the crossover :) One day.

I must say though...the best speakers that I've heard so far have been a brand called PMC - model called EB1. They were properly set up in a large room powered by some Krell gear. Oh my good lord... LOL. The Ushers will keep me happy but they cannot wipe away what I've heard and long for.

Speaker components have specs called Theil-Small parameters which manufacturers design around. These are things such as impedence, resonant frequency, mechanical resistance..etc As components loosen with use, these values can change. Some manufacturers design speakers knowing the specs will change so the ideal sound will not be when the speaker is not broken in, but when the the parameters have settled and wont shift any more. You can consider it like the old days of engines breaking in.

This is not a bash video or a challenge vid. Emeek posted a vid where he was running cinebench but without the timer visible. I stopwatched the event and tried the same to see how my Q6600 would stack up. Very similar results. Guess Cinebench is not very memory bandwidth intensive since the dual dualcore xeons should have more mem bandwidth.

Ya I know... I've got my DDR2 667 running at 533 right now. I didnt try going very far like this just because I think I wont really notice the difference in speed for what I do with it. Even gaming is mostly GPU bound so not sure if overclocking will really do me much good. You should do a Cinebench 9.5 and Cinebench 10 vid and post it. Its probably insanely fast!

you know you can change the ram so it runs at a lower speed so when you oc it itll oc well too, i put mine at a setting that ends up only like 3 mhz faster than stock ram speed. i put my cpu at 9x436 1.6v and teh mch is at +1.5 and the fsb is at 1.25+.

holy crap thats high. I tried a little overclocking with mine but my RAM is not happy. LOL. I think I got to about 2.8Ghz just barely. Mind you I didnt try bumping the voltage for teh RAM or CPU. I left it at 1.8V for the RAM (which is just Kingston Valueram 667). I'm running it at 1:1 with the CPU so I've actually downgraded to 533Mhz for the RAM.LOL. Anyway its all good. I'm incredibly happy with the speed of the Q6600 even with the RAM at 533. Its a wicked CPU.

Seems Emeek thinks I lied about how long it took to do the test in his Mac vs PC: Cinebench 9.5 vid. I dont see how I lied. There is no timer to show how long it took so I used a stopwatch. Started it from the point the render button was clicked until the render finished. Did that for both systems. Seems pretty fair. The scores cannot be compared to other cinebench scores but its a good way to compare the Q6600 and dual dualcore xeon to see the difference in time between them - which was small.

Leo, you're probably not old enough to remember but that specific Dell keyboard is among one of the best keyboards made. Its over 10 years old and still ticking...The mouse is fantastic as well and the speakers are amazing sounding and quite accurate. Dont judge a book by its cover. Many times, things that are pretty or attractive may not be as nearly as good. That Trinitron CRT is still better for color accuracy when compared to an LCD and it has no fixed resolution issues (ie scaling).

Hi Blacksteel25, that keyboard is actually one of the old school Dell keyboards. They are fantastic. Very similar in feel to the IBM except the keys are a little easier to press down. I have 3 of these keyboards but I also have two IBM M type keyboards. I think both types are virtually indestructible :)

The benefit of SCSI is not short boot times. Heck 5-10 seconds can be lost during boot with windows just querying the controller card. The benefit of SCSI is its ability to handle large number of random read and writes such as multi user environments or possibly under extreme single user multitasking. Imagine a car and pickup truck analogy. With almost no load, the car might be faster even...but add 2000lbs and watch the car slow big time. The SCSI is the truck in this case :)
