My grandparents are Geechee (my grandpa was raised in Beaufort and my grandma on Wadmalaw Island) and they always told me it was good that I could talk like them b/c one day, nobody would ever remember that Geechee/Gullah ever existed, that their culture might just disappear. I grew up in Robert Taylor... It was not that bad in the late 1970's and early '80s. When crack and heroin came the projects diminished drastically... why didn't I blame the gangs... Well they were around when I was growing up in the projects but back then they did not run anything... Only when the drugs that I mentioned earlier came into play the gangs became more powerful.

A strange but true story. I traveled to Charlston SC once on business. I was unaware of its history. I stood on a beach in the center of town and a very powerful sadness came over me and I began to cry. I asked a bystander had anything bad ever happend here and she said yes. I was standing on an old slave auction block and did I not know it. I felt the pain, the anguish, and a creepy bad vibe. I have never gone back to Charleston. I will never forget that experience.
