this was most prettiest thing you would see after the event of a nuclear aftermath
By: ignoblius. on 18 Nov 08, 00:34:04
During normal flight, the seats were about 2 ft. in front of their escape pods. The ejection sequence required that the seat retract backward into the pod so that the pod doors could shut. The retract mechanism for the co-pilot's seat couldn't overcome the plane's high-G flat spin, so the eject sequence for his seat could not start. The pilot couldn't help, having his arm caught in the door of his own escape pod, though he finally managed to eject.

the flight incident was just the final drop. by the time the XB-70 was done, it was already unnecessary. the new anti-aircraft defense sistems negated its two main advantages over a B52 that it was supposed to replace - high speed and high altitude. then the ICBMs came to the scene and the entire concept of a nuclear bomber became unnecessary.
By: guguigugu. on 16 Nov 08, 18:25:52
hmmm... i don't think so... the USAF neded a nuclear bomber that could fly very fast at very high altitudes, to avoid interceptors and successfully deliver its payload. the XB-70 was a direct result of such endeavours. the XB actually means "prototype bomber" a super-sonic transport is not really something that any armed force would require.
By: JoeyLeafRunner. on 16 Nov 08, 08:09:12
The only remaining XB-70 is at Wright-Patterson AFB can't wait to see it next month.
By: greendaysaint8302. on 15 Nov 08, 03:31:15
The XB-70 was a SST prior to being adapted for supersonic bomber research
By: aluisious. on 14 Nov 08, 07:56:23
BTW...why the fuck wouldn't one pilot ejecting automatically make both pilots eject? In what POSSIBLE scenario would only one pilot want to leave the aircraft in a rocket propelled chair while the other stuck around to see what was going to happen?
By: aluisious. on 14 Nov 08, 07:52:41
Back in the day we used to get shit done. These days it takes 15 years for an idea to get out of a committee.

Wow excellent video... thanks for posting!!! That has to be the strangest looking plane but how amazing was that voyage.
By: joshs088008. on 09 Nov 08, 03:49:08
if i was in charge of that project, i would have been saying "what a failure". its a wicked aircraft though
By: guguigugu. on 07 Nov 08, 01:51:12
definitely not. the design is similar because both are supersonic, but that's it. XB-70 was an advanced american bomber prototype, and the concorde was a british-french passenger plane.
By: specifictender. on 06 Nov 08, 20:27:51
Is this a predcessor of the Concorde?
By: leefish1. on 06 Nov 08, 05:03:07
Designed with pencil, paper, and slide rules. Piloted by those with brass balls... Those days will truly never pass this way again...

if BS that they stopped this b/c of a idiotic f-104 pilot
By: TerryBogardHimself. on 01 Nov 08, 03:54:11
And this stunning aircraft was created before the advent of computer-aided design, powerful mathematics and simulation software. Definitely one of the top tier achievements in aerospace engineering history.

Thank you for sharing this video. As a former pilot I can appreciate the dangers of an experimental aircraft.

I got to see this XB-70 fly over on it's way to the AF Museum at WPAFB in Dayton. On a sunny winter day in 1969, our entire grade school went outside and looked up as it flew over Beavercreek, Ohio. It was beautiful.

I'm 58 and back then, I made a free flight, engine powered model of this wonderful plane. A tribute to the design, the model plane flew with stability and grace with no radio control at all. I should build an RC version with a couple of model turbines.
By: TheTurbinator. on 04 Oct 08, 05:00:52
What an epic failure.
By: gjkam. on 01 Oct 08, 16:55:08
You are correct. When I got to Edwards as a young techie in may of 1966, it had already been decided that the two to be finished (of the three already started), would be testbeds. Joe was widely regarded to be the best pilot in the Free World.
By: gjkam. on 01 Oct 08, 16:49:28
You are correct. The reason for the flight was to take photos of the A/C we had at Eddies with GE engines - we lost that new bird and two test pilots for a PR stunt. It was June 8, 1966, two days from my 22d birthday. I was a young excited kid on my way back from my first predawn B-52 Mothership/X-15 checkout, when Joe Walker, whom I had never met, taxied up beside the van I was driving, waved to the two of us inside, and went on his way. He never came back. And I never forgot it.

Actually, I meant the MiG 21. And I accidentally ran into the guys who went up in the Blackbirds and set those records, by bumbling into their office one day looking for Finance in the wrong building. They were gracious and very approachable. I wanted to ask for a pic with their signatures, but had to maintain whatever cool I could muster.
By: omglollmao123. on 29 Sep 08, 23:01:15
You mean MiG-25, that was the high speed intercepter MiG-23 is the "Flogger", the Soviet old fighter
