I sang this a couple of weeks ago for the memorial service of a boy who was tragically killed in a safari accident last year. The chapel was completely packed (as one would expect) and it was at the final, soaring Amen that I saw many people break down. Music of this sort makes such tragedies even more poignant (if that is indeed possible), and although I did not know the boy, I was certainly affected.

It is still alive and kicking in the Anglican Cathedrals of the UK, as well as school chapels (to a varying degree), and College Chapels, particularly at Oxford or Cambridge. Many cathedrals have daily Evensong, where this sort of music will be sung.

I'm glad you like the music, but there is nothing "wierd" about it. SSAA and SSA refer to the number of soprano and alto parts. The "uniform" consists of a cassock, surplice and ruff, which is quite normal and standard for English choirs, going back hundreds of years. The dramatic height differces are because the soprano is sung by boys 8 to 14 and the other parts by men. The arrangement of the choir stalls is quite normal for churches.

What is SSAA and SSA? their mouths are funny to look at.their uniform is weird and the height difference is weird.The fact that they are using benches to hold music is also strange.Besides the choir the anouncation, the rythym is great but my spelling isnt.I learned this in my first year of a school district select choir and I loved it and I am in my Third and last year in it and I'm looking up all my old songs and it brings back memories.I love John Rutter and I love this song.Organ's great!

Royal School of Church Music. The medals signify which grade you are at. If I remember correctly light blue if the first and then dark blue and then red etc. The haed chorister definately gets a ribbon and sometimes the librarian does. This scheme is carried out throughout England to different degrees.

Wow...that was great! But does anyone have any information on The Mitchell Boys Choir. I assume this is the same group of boys that was on stage with Bing at the end of the movie White Christmas. I don't know much about this boys choir. They sound great and I notice they were trained with a procounced vibratto which sounds fascinating to me.

One very minor criticism: They're being a bit too complex on the pointing of the text. e.g. "The Lord shall preserve thy going / out and thy coming / in" instead of the much simpler "The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy /com-ing/ in." It actually makes the psalm drag a bit even if it is a virtuoso performance.

Yes, the whole perfomance as a whole is superb. The comments merely reflect the fact that Alexander and Robin are celebrated soloists of the Tolzer boys choir, I think. The other fact of note is that by this time Robin was actually no longer a soprano (he is the boy who sang the queen of the night recording), they pulled him out of the "mutation class" especially for this concert. Actually, the Tenor soloist used to be a soprano soloist as well.

Contrary to the introductory notes, this piece is not a trio for 2 trebles and baritone. It's actually a QUARTET for SSAT. In this performance the alto part (the cantus firmus) is sung by the ripienists instead of a soloist. From all the commentary about the two boy sopranos, you'd think no one else is this performance was worth listening to. The TENOR soloist who is singing the lowest part of this QUARTET is also quite good.

Funny thing is - St Paul's Choir is so much taken for granted. They are not generally seen as one of UK's top choirs - but they never disappoint, they always deliver. They deserve huge credit for that. Thanks for this latest top-class vid.

khswild - this is not the same group of boys no; as RyanGolddRedux said, it is the predecessor of the present group known as Libera. This version was done by Angel Voices(St Philip's), under the same choirmaster as Libera, Robert Prizeman. So it is Libera in a way, but not the most recent recording of the song.

"... boys don't sing Soprano ..." In Italian, sopra means "above" and the male ending "o" tells a lot about the origins of the term. Why not "a" (soprana) for the female? One may ask "above" what? Above alto - which means high - again with male ending. Same reason. So girls who sing high should be "sopranas" and "altas" - what do you think?

"Legato" is the musical term for joining the individual notes of a musical phrase into a whole. Every phrase of this performance demonstrates good legato singing. The exact opposite is "staccato" where each note is separated. Mozart's "Queen of the night" aria would be one example of where this technique is used.

For me, Connor Burrowes gave one of the finest performances I have ever heard from an English treble. The CD "A Quiet Conscience" from 1998 was of mostly 17th Century religious songs; unusual and challenging for a boy.But his searing purity of tone is perfect for them. The whole disc is magnificent but I would single out "O God for ever blessed" by John Church. Connor's performance here is mesmeric,moving effortlessly from sustained legato to delicate lightness at will.Unmissable.
