Opel Vectra C 2.0DTi cold start problem?

The engine starts, but it coughs a little tiny bit and in the starting process it usually smokes grey. Then the damn problem light pops on. At the end of the video you can hear that I push the gas-pedal a bit more and the warning light turns off. I suspect a glowplug or 2 are worn out.

Hallo, I had this problem and I resolved. The problem was the same: on cold start light was on, then swicth off after few seconds, on hot start nothing, all ok. Was a "start candle" of four. There are 4 candle for COLD start that are resistive for heat diesel. One of these was break. If you unmount and colleagues at the positive battery cable and then you touch the car you'll see the sparks. If it does not spark then broke down. I change that 2 weeek ago and cost of piece was only 12 euros!

I believe that the problem may just be that the engine either has a VERY small compression leak, or you are running a bit rich. If you are running rich, check the oxygen sensor in your exhaust pipe to be sure it isn't damaged. The engine may just be detecting the cold engine temperature and believe that the engine is running too lean and therefore not heating up fast enough. If this is true, then that explains why the check engine light goes out when you rev it and bring the temperature up.

with a fully synthetic oil normal change interval is 20k-30k km, it depends on a car manufacturer recommendations. 15k km is way too less, except if the car is new and the mileage is fresh:]

use 5W-40, all the way better as its thin enough to flow evenly at cold start-ups. also, thick enough to sustain turbo-charged engines. I get my oil changed every 4000 miles (6400 km), despite the service intervals recommendations of 12000 miles (19200 km). use Shell Helix ultra 5W-40, and you'll notice difference.

I use 10w40 full sythetic. I covered 15k km(not miles) since the last oil change. I replaced the glowplugs and now it works fine. Thanks for the tip anyway :)

if glow plugs have problem, then this would have problem starting up. what grade oil you are using? and when was last time you changed the oil? with 143k miles on clock. i would suspect engine covered in sludge. get a decent engine flush and change oil filter too. as it gets even after few secs, means oil flow gets ok.

Yes. The one with 160 hp will have 1 turbo, 190hp one will have 2 turbos. But how many turbos a car have doesnt really have much to do with turbo lag, because all new diesels have turobs with changable geometry, which spins the turbine all the time, so theres no lag at all even at diesels with only 1 turbocharger.

i heard the new insignia will have this engine but will have 2 turbos, a small one for low end revvs so it will spool up faster and then change over in higher revvs to a larger turbo to give it optimum response and power, so nearly no turbo lag what so ever.

Rubbish! That's the old 2.0DTi (X20DTH)...those engines used to overheat! The Y20DTH here can be tuned with no consequences at all (if driven normaly...that goes for all engines, obviously).

the turbo starts spinning at around 1700rpm...it gives full power around 3000 if you feel that power comes in a big lump around 2500rpm there is probably a problem with the MAF sensor.

Mine smokes quite a lot too if I don't wait for the glowplug light...but only when the engine is dead cold. I replaced all 4 glowplugs and now it seems to be fine :)
