yea, my band did it, too my freshman yr. its not as nice w/o the strings (and of course the oboes! and english horn), but you still get somewhere. if i recall most of the pulse was through the middle voices and lower brass and percussion. woodwinds took care of everything else. FINGER BUSTER!

i respect your opinion but im one of those Johnny freaks and I saw the movie first. I am insane but I'm right that johnny sings fantastically. maybe, just maybe, this musical isn't my taste? The Tim Burton movie is really good and I think the original; the play, is equally as good. I agree with Lissy71, they have their own ways of portraying Sweeney - Johnny's was grittier and more suitible for the film and George's one is better suited for musicals as his version of Sweeney Todd is a good singer which is crucial in musicals.

Remember that the high-caliber musicians like the Flecktones have thousands of people who desire to have a piece of them, and I should agree with them in that of signing autographs and else... That is really exhausting, and even more after a concert... I don't know who you you are on about but I met Bela Fleck this Summer, It was my first time abroad ever and we had gone to Canada to see him at a music festival. Long story short I ended up meeting him and I wanted him to sign my banjo. there I was, meeting my hero, aged 14, first time out of England to near enough just meet him and he just signed it and turned his back to me to talk to this African bloke. The least I could have expected was "play me something" or a conversation!

Even though I've loved Helena Bonham Carter since the Merchant-Ivory days, I have to say the movie Sweeney was really jarring for me. But that's probably because I fell in love with this particular Angela Lansbury production, and especially the cast recording. The score was drastically altered for the film--not, in my opinion, for the better. But I completely agree--this is one of the most inspired and brilliant musicals ever produced. It's what first made me a Sondheim fan.

Also, Theatre calls for a lot more dramatic liscence - audience members using their imaginations to fill out the sets; knowing that Joannna's dancing is a flashback, etc.

I agree which is what I already said. However everyone is entitled to complain. I mean if I was playing Nellie&had put a lot of hard work into it then you would be complaining [because I cant sing] people stop being offensive or just saying something like the film's better, unless you can prevent evidence to back up there opinion Oh and my last point for today. You have all forgotten the most important thing, half of the joy of the theatre is the atmosphere which none of us are experiencing.

By 'this Sweeney' I meant the actor not the play. And to everyone else, This stage play must have been good or we wouldn't have the film, now then would we. In my opinion, The stage has to be over dramatic, so all the characters are crazy :D But the film is a lot darker meaning that all the characters are dark, or the actors focus more on showing their dark side as opposed to crazy side :)

Okay - look Stephen Sondheim created the role specifically for Angela Lansbury and it won her , her Fourth Tony Award, all for Best Actress in a Musical. So that is that as far as her singing and acting abilities. Now as far as the movie - totally different with younger actors and of course made as a movie. If you watched the movie first, then this stage version would seem kind of weird, but don't trash it because that is very insulting to one of the Best Musicals in Broadway's History.

You know, it does kinda bug me when people compare phenomenal performances with one from a film that was probably shot over 100 times and edited like crazy. (Not to mention pre-recorded songs). THIS is live. THIS is musical theatre. Whatever happens, happens. If it's not on key or someone's character didn't quite come out that night, then that's too bad. The show must go on. So stop complaining and enjoy.

To be fair, this is a play meaning that you have to over act, for example the bugs in the film the camera can focus on them but Angela has to show them to the audience And Helena's voice is put in after so shes not running around and canrepeat until its right However Ill be sticking to hearing Angela in Bedknobs and Broomsticks :D This sweeney is awful! x

Aah, this scene always gets me at "My Friends". I love the broadway, and am trying to show it to as many people I can. Although I saw the movie first, the broadway remains my favoueite. 1: I think this should have been a solo. Her voice is annoying and they don't match up good. 2: I think it was too fast. He should have slowed it down; embraced the notes. He should be in a trance-like stage to see his razors again, but it's like an "I want to get this done as soon as I can" mood in this version. But I have to give him props for that last line he yells in the end. I think Depp was too soft with that last line.

Although I'm firmly in the Lansbury/Hearn camp, it may be that those who prefer the Burton adaptation are more attuned to the storyline and action rather than to the music itself. I love, love, love the Broadway cast recording--in fact, I've listened to it more times than I've seen any stage production or movie adaptation. Sondheim's orchestration and lyrics are so brilliant. Those who are looking for a good penny-dreadful horror story, though, might like the film more.

Yes, I agree! Hearn's Sweeney has lost everything and the one thing that remains for him in his life is revenge. He's monomaniacal because any possibility of happiness, love and fulfillment has been stolen from him. What else can he do but exact revenge on those who wronged him and his family? I think it's an indictment of a system that allows working people to be brutalized at the hand of the privileged class.

Johnny approached it like that because it was a film version...therefore it was to be performed more internally rather externally. Also Tim Burton's work is like that. Tim focused a lot on close-ups in the movie to show the character's journey. that's why the chorus music songs were cut out so Tim can just show what the character's feel and think

yes this play came in 1979 and then they've been having all sorts of revivals the most recent one was in 2006 or something like that with micheal cerverus and patti lupone, i think thats where he got the idea this was like the first cast to ever ever perform the musical sweeney todd.
