Also, read this : "In 2000, Big West and Studio Nue took Tatsunoko Productions to the Tokyo District Court over who had the rights to the first Macross series, due to Harmony Gold's attempt to bar Japanese Macross merchandise in North America the previous year." Not only Robotech is a ripoff, but that ripoff is blocking Macross merchandise worldwide. Because of Robotech, Macross Zero and Frontier won't get a official worlwide release. Many anime and Macross fans are pissed about that.

So Robotech is just a ripoff of three different anime TV series including Macross. It's not the original thing.
