Thats true but keep in mind that there was no three point line back then and large % of his shots was beyond that distance. Think what his average would have been then!!!

Pete was about showtime folks. Not about shooting percentage. I don't think anyone paid attention to that back then. It's a different ball game now.

Not at all. MJ's older brother Larry wore number 45 in high school which was also MJ's favorite number so MJ chose number 23 which was half of 45. It has nothing to do with Pistol.

MJ's jersey no. is 23 coz of PISTOL
By: sleestak33. on 26 Oct 08, 17:04:14
Absolutely...you can throw Allen Iverson in there too with his career 42% shooting. While these guys did alot of good things you just can't shoot that % and be considered one of the all time greats. It clearly shows that they just jacked up more shots than anybody else and had very poor shot selection.

Im with you man. With all due respect to the legend what are we really celebrating? A volume shooter? I mean look at his percentages - 44% career shooter? So what if he has a 40+ ppg average in college? The guy shotjacked the entire time! Guys like Oscar or MJ were much more efficient, give them all the shot attempts Pete had and they blow his records out of the water. This is not a slam on Pete its just simple math. I just cant accept that this guy was the greatest shooter ever with those %'s..

you have to many guards on the team, Bill Russell was only 6'11". Olajuwon barkley and malone would own any front court, and jordan and pistol would handle the back court effortlessly

I agree with you. So many people forget about Jerry West and Bob Cousey, they just know of Steve Nash and Allen Iverson etc. How many poeple even know who George Miken is today?
By: questly. on 14 Oct 08, 03:11:31
I didn't forget MJ, its just EVERYONE has MJ on their team, and BIRD and MAGIC. Same old, same old. It gets boring man. MJ was great and all but their are other guys in the history of the game that were great as well. Plus MJ had some crazy marketing, and you know it. Imagine if Elgin Baylor had every basketball commercial about him? How much more would people roll his name off their tounge?

Keep in mind however, that Pistol played on pretty crummy teams throughout his whole career (with the exception of the Celtics right before he retired). This gave him the opportunity to put up a lot of shots (thus miss a lot of shots). It all balances out I suppose.
By: sleestak33. on 18 Sep 08, 14:49:45
The guy was an unbelivable ball-handler and showman but his career 42% field goal shooting (college and pro) to me takes away from his legend considerably. If he had used a better shot selection and shot a higher percentage he would be right there with anybody but guys like him and Iverson (career 41% shooter) basically just jacked up the ball a million times to get their points.
By: JJL721. on 17 Sep 08, 18:58:29
Yeah he did, he did all those trick passes and stuff. I think he helped his teamates get a lot of shots.
By: theycallmedubey. on 15 Sep 08, 19:28:53
No Way!!! Pete was one hell of a player but the only reason that he did get all those scores was because he never let anyone else on the team shoot
By: richardgenotiva. on 06 Sep 08, 19:20:18
