Great to see how Duran throws a jab, then waits for Leonard to move into his slip position before he hits him with a right cross-left hook combination at 7:12. Genius at work!
By: corytclark. on 08 Nov 08, 01:10:36
No, no, no! The comment on Duran being either the #1 or #2 lightweight of all time was MY opinion! him being the 8th greatest fighter of all time was Bert Sugar's opinion.
By: judaschongo. on 08 Nov 08, 00:48:50
figures Sugar would think like that. Duran was #1 all time greatest lightweight. Benny Leonard ahead of his time no doubt but unfortunately for him Carlos Ortiz was #2. Even Arguello who was a natural featherweight, IMO would of defeated both Benny & Chavez.
By: corytclark. on 07 Nov 08, 01:49:49
Definitely true. I would have him at either #1 or #2 lightweight of all time, depending if you think Benny Leonard is better or not. But in Bert Sugar's book Boxings Greatest Fighters, he has Roberto Duran ranked # 8 of all time, right behind Muhammad Ali and right in front of Jack Dempsey

Leonard didn't have grease he was just A SHINING BROTHER
By: Irish4Jabber. on 25 Oct 08, 04:08:55
thanks for posting this. I was just a kid at the time but I was at that fight. Sad to say that there was a guy killed on the under card. the guy who killed him was using way too much tape on his hands.
By: judaschongo. on 18 Oct 08, 10:33:22
when you talk of the greatest boxers, Duran is definitely among them.
By: flotifa69. on 18 Oct 08, 02:25:44
Did he say Duran doesn't have any grease on him? The commentator obviously doesn't live in a border state.

More accurately, beat Benitez when the unbeaten champ was stopped by the ref with 10 secs remaining and then Ray reneged on the agreed rematch. Beat Hearns by the skin of his teeth when well behind on the cards and took a decade to grant a rematch. Was out-boxed, punched and brawled by Duran in Montreal, and won the rematch when a slow and bloated Duran retired unhurt. Beat Hagler with a gift decision and retired to avoid a rematch. End of story.

Duran started professional boxing at age 16 and weighted 126 lbs. He ruled the lightweights from 1972 til 1978. His was only 5'7" and his natural weight was 135-140. When he fought Leonard his record was 71-1. Ray held every physical advantage over him. Younger, bigger, stronger, reach. It would be like Duran fighting a guy 5'4". Duran overcame all these factors and beat him. End of story.

Leonard won the olympic gold medal, beat Benitez, Duran, Hearns and Hagler. End of story.

Read George Kimball's new book called Four Kings, about Duran,Leonard,Hearns and Hagler. Great stuff. He covered all the fights for a Boston newspaper and his writing and details are incredible. What great days those were.

pointless is telling these nerds its pointlesss.... if they could understand that concept u'd would never have to mention it.
By: ksjb85. on 14 Sep 08, 16:43:37
black rasicm? race has nothing to do with this. Leonards trainer was white, and so was duran's...both were great fighters...all this arguing is so pointless.

duran never once called leonard a racial name,,,he called leaonard a spider and a clown but never called him nigger or various spanish insults such as teron, tinto, and miyate,,,,duran had class,,besides durans corner was always multi racial,,unlike leonard who only used black cornermen,,pure black racism,,,,
By: nastylefthook1. on 05 Sep 08, 08:05:39
obama reminds me of sugar ray leonard,,lots of flash but no substance,,ability to win but never willing to put it all the line to establish greatness,,just smoke and mirrors which a lot of suckers fall for,,,,,
By: BadMotorskooter. on 05 Sep 08, 00:58:24
the opposition put in a bitch to help McCain fite his battle, just the same as duran does in here
By: BadMotorskooter. on 05 Sep 08, 00:54:10
sorry, there is a far more important argument going on rite now than the one about that panamainian cockroach, that littl jumpingbean quitter. I got more important buisness, my next president needs me
By: alxadm. on 03 Sep 08, 01:16:53
You never saw guys like Ali or Leonard use moves like that. They were lazy fighters who never took their game to a higher level like Duran. Leonard and Ali both liked to shoe shine, dance and con the judges, rather than perfecting their craft. Duran was far better if you ask any boxing aficionado.
By: alxadm. on 03 Sep 08, 01:11:09
The idea is to put the same weight of the body behind the left as the right through a sudden shift to southpaw. Grampa said it was a peculiar series of moves, that shift, and a little alarming when the whole works came whriling at you. Nobody he saw use it until Duran. Old Gramps entertained with his stories.
By: alxadm. on 03 Sep 08, 01:05:31
For those of you who aren't fimilar with the Fitzsimmons shift it was an arcane move, according to Gramps, which I think won the title for Fitzsimmons over Corbett. It's a technique lost in modern day boxing until the great fighter from Panama,Roberto Duran, came on the scene.
