i think it's because duran duran is looked at as being commercial/top40/pop while Japan is considered a bit more highbrow. i could be totally wrong but that's just my opinion. i personally like both.

The lines I like a lot are "The maelstrom of my memory is a vampire and it feeds on me now"..What memories contributes to insanity and how they can corrode the minds of lonely people. "locked in silent monologue" is another great line. The second part of the song is more tricky and can be seen as a flashback of images and memories which led him into his actual state (locking back on the years, seems I have lost my way...) and the reasons of why he chose a solitary life...

Another interpretation here: The song is about the "plague" of the lighthouse keeper, where "Plague" is the solitude he experiences in his job as a lighthouse keeper ("my tower is built on stone"). He starts to loose his mind in this solitude and starts to freak as the song says, and finally he comitted suicide jumping into the sea.

Talk about revisionism..I saw VDGG a number of times around the pawnhearts period and they never played it once. but I quote from the remastered pawn hearts booklet page 12 Jaxon says" we only played it (a plague)live once, and that was for Belgian tv. This is the proformance that you are calling the godbluff dvd but is in fact two separate films. This is why you will never find it on a bootleg. Unless of course its the Belgian TV film.

i doubt that any sane vocalist would try to outdo Hammill with a VDGG cover. It's just pointless. The thing about Hammill that has impresses me so much is that every live and recorded performance he gives the cliched "100%." He doesn't do a "Bowie" and take the easy road. My esteem for Gabriel's Genesis and Hammill's VDGG just keeps growing. To have seen them both in one concert (w/ Lindisfarne) back in the early 70s would be a fulfillment of a musical fantasy.

I heard them play this live in 1976 in Cardiff, and it spoiled a lot of other bands for me. There's an edgy intensity to VDGGs performance that is plain lacking in a lot of the other bands I've seen. PH would be the fist to admit that, as a live act, they weren't always polished - but they were always an absolute tour-de-force.

I'm planning on staying in the place Johnny died in. Not to mention the day he died on. I'm sad he had to go. It would have been great if he and Jerry(replacement drummer) were at the Meltdown Festival in 2004 with the New York Dolls reunited. Its also sad Billy(original drummer) and Arthur(bassist) that they died too. I wish they were all alive.

Dude, Pete Doherty has all the rock n roll charisma as any of the greats. The fact that we are comparing him to Johnny is proof enough. Pete will most likely suffer the same fate as Johnny as far as popularity goes. Plus, the guy isn't allowed in the U.S. and U.S marketers don't seem to want real rock and roll artists and all the trouble that follows them. But, ten or twenty years from now he'll be lumped right in with all the others. Great vid by the way!!

"Watch the world spinning gently out of time." - This movie is unique. Uncomparable to another. Pure magic. A weird performance by Martin Sheen, a stunning Sissy Spacek. VdGG's music had more in common with avant garde and free jazz music, than any Prog of that era. Plus, Peter's lyrics certainly weren't of the usual Prog ilk. Lyrically they were and are way beyond that. Bottom line, VdGG were/are so unique, they are in category all their own, which...of course....caused a big problem with them getting promoted properly. And don't forget PH's NADIR LP foretold punk music!

VdGG's roots are more in the psychedelic rock of the 60s (they were really into Arthur Brown) and in jazz influences, not in prog rock. Jaxon has been compared to the jazz great Roland Kirk. Peter also claims to be a blues, folk music & show tune enthusiast, though you don't really hear that outright in their music. Perhaps the show tune influence is there, in Peter's melodramatic vocals. Ha!

If I can add my two cents here, many VdGG fans actually categorize them as a 'progressive band'. Peter has always contended that they were an "underground band". He actually doesn't like them being labeled a 'prog' band because he feels they weren't then or now! Unfortunately, VdGG got lumped in the prog movement because of the organ in their line-up. ANY band with an organ was deemed "prog".

drumbux - Hugh Banton can first be seen at 0:31 and also at 4:42 amongst others. He plays most of the more complex keyboard parts, plus bass pedal (as replacement for bass guitar), with Peter Hammill on supplementary keyboard parts and electric guitar (although not here). Peter Hammill writes and sings the songs. Hugh Banton is a brilliant musician, up there with Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson (IMHO), and musically a driving force behiind VDGG, but prefers a low profile.
