(and this whole BBC show is awesome) By the way I'll share this little story: few days ago we were hanging out with some friends from the university here in Edinburgh and we met this 22-23 yrs old student from California. That is just so incredible. I have been a Joni fanatic for a very long time. Before You Tube, the only Joni I could ever find on video was two of her songs at Isle of Wight and "Coyote" in The Last Waltz. Joni did miss Woodstock because she was booked to appear on Dick Cavett's show, but if she'd gone to Woodstock, her song named after it would not have been written. I love the CSNY version, however, as was said, "David Crosby in an interview in the documentary 'Joni Mitchell: Woman of Heart and Mind' said that Mitchell had captured the feeling and importance of the Woodstock festival better than anyone who had been there." A love song??? OMG! Right Matt, but it's also allegorical.The guy by the stand played great music i.e. he was someone with something worth 'saying', worth hearing. But he wasn't a celebrity,a film star or a millionaire so he doesn't get invited onto talk shows or made US President or Governor of California. So no one bothers to listens to him. Man, so wrong. This is a song about her disassociation with the music industry, see "You turn me on I'm a radio" and also "Woodstock". She missed Woodstock because her manager told her to go and appear on a TV show instead, this built into the hollow and harrowing sounds throughout the original recording. The man was ignored just because "he had never been on the TV".

I saw her at the Greek Theatre in LA in 2001. Does not matter what version (big orchestra, though I think this song is better like this), I have never seen any song effect an audience like this. People were openly weeping, like all the armor of living city life had cracked open and this song unleashed all the feelings buried in their hearts. It was extraordinary and I wept along with them. The snippets of a quest for individuality and independence are enlightening; you see a firm desire to achieve a real bond but at the same time not play by anyone else's rules (or conventions). You (as the listener) realize how how important the "old man" is to her. Very sweet story, sung gorgeously by her powerful voice. The piano is played with such flair & creativity. Enjoyed this all around, from start to finish. Thanks for sharing!

Joni is a pearl-- a radiant angel. This to me, too, was the greatest generation in art and music in the twentieth century. There are few now who see the light, let alone who can carry the torch. Anyone with ears reacts that way. She's the greatest female singer/songwriter of all time IMHO (with all due respect to Carole King). Sorry, for my previous comment. It was pretty immature (and it had poor grammar, too). I usually listen to instrumental music so when I see instrumentalists like Pat Metheny and Jaco Pastorius play with vocalists I immediately think they're selling out. I've listened to more Joni Mitchell and I realize she is pretty cool. I like her music a lot more than most other singers.
