Great stuff !!! Thanks for putting it on. The first that struck me was the good Audio quality of the recording - you really get a sense of the notes and tones coming from Jimi's Fender Stratocaster ! Unlike like some footage where the audio is a bit " muddy " - this one's got good clarity.

well...for what it's worth..I'm a personal friend of ex Band of Gypsies bassist and good friend (perhaps even best) of Jimi's Billy Cox...I asked him what he thought of The Red Hot Chili Peppers and he told me he thought they were cool...'kinda like a hyped up B.O.G.' he said...when I asked him what Jimi would think of their guitarists he said that Jimi would dig them all but would probably like the one who played with P-Funk on the Grammy's best;he meant Ahreek Marshall! because of his groove!

He's a damn good guitarist too but i would have to go with Hendrix as the BEST. his songs are not only one of Rock's Best but also in guitar playing, its one of the most innovative sounds to have been created and played. no one has done such Awesome work as much as him. I was there, the Y.L's "liberated"(invaded) the concert and subjected the crowd to an onslaught of socialist/communist pandering bullshit rant laced with posturing and attitude.which was very popular at the time until the mostly suburban white kid crowd. pelted them with soda cans and orange drink containers. They learned it from their liberal asshole professors at City University, and it didn't "play to the audience". That bourgeois bullshit didn't cut it !!!

I still have the bootleg of the concert on CD. It's too bad EH shut down J.I.M.I. Lot's of unreleased material. Jimi eventually tells the audience to "fuck off these are my friends" when he tries to do his verbal rap intro as he always did on Voodoo Child. They were tired and impatient. I saw the original release of the movie "Free" in Hollywood when it toured through. There was also a live band that played before and after the movie was shown. I think it was Bo Diddley on one occasion.

I live across the river from Randall's Island now called Dowing Staduim. There's bridge that rises to let larger ships through would get stuck, stranding fans on and off Manhattan to the Randalls Island entrance at 103rd Street FDR Drive. And the soundboard boot this is one of my favorite bootlegs of all time deserves an official release out of Dagger Records. At one point in the concert Hendrix's guitar amp picks up AM radiowaves from....1010 Wins News!!!! This was a concert event!

It's a shame. We had Hendrix during an era of seemingly poor video recording equipment. Unlike the hdtv available these days. I mean, knowing that there are premium recordings of "Mr Rogers" neighborhood out there... (no really, such a waste of video tape) that makes me sad everytime I think of that. This concert was filmed by Bert Tenzer, a B-Movie/Horror director who did a couple of films in the 60's. It was released theatrically in 1973 as "Free: The Day the Music Died" I don't think a video version of this movie was ever produced but the two color performances you refer to are from the movie itself. There were multiple cameramen at this concert so there is definitely a lot more footage. The state its in is questionable.

This must have been the hardest crowd Jimi ever played to. Not out of their lack of desire. This audience was beyond exhaustion, and crashing hard from mass quantities of psychedelics, after three non-stop days where the place resembled a prison riot. Jimi's set was the culminating "Grand Finale", and Hendrix stepped on stage to face a burnt-out group of stragglers, the hardcore, who had suffered the whole ordeal, to be there for him.

I was there. All three days. The bonfires, the clanging of pots, the announcements, "Don't take the purple acid!", the cheerleading by an Arnold Stang type, "Ho, Ho, Ho Chi Minh! The Viet Cong are gonna win!". It was chaos, it was anarchy, it was wonderful! But Jimi's appearance at Randall's Island is a testament to his legendary generosity and loving spirit. You see, everybody had crashed the gate. There was no money to pay all the great artists that were booked.

Don't sweat it.You know the truth.I've got B&W proof sheets from the 69 Forum concert and also the 68 Hollywood Bowl concert.They were given to me by Tom Nyerges who shot them. There are some of us that are collectors or old enough to have been there. I almost got my hands on a 8mm tape of the Tonight show (rare footage) in the 70's. Given its accoustics (long and tall, rather than wide like the Beacon or Academy of Music) it was quite possibly the best listening room for amplified music in the country. There is a wee bit of footage from the Allmans show at the Fillmore that weekend, but it's silent. There's some great sound footage of them there on 9/23/70. Both are on Youtube. You might wanna type in "Allmans with Duane" to find it. The tunes on these Hendrix shows were mostly works in progress, but brilliant just the same. He was a messenger from beyond!

How I wish there was video of the Allmans from that 3/13/71 gig! I am of the opinion that the best of the 4 shows BOG played here was in fact the 1st one 12/31/69. The version of Bleeding Heart is mindblowing, and on my audience tape the two guys who were rec'd the show can be heard commenting during that song- they say "Wes Montgomery" after Jimi does a nice little octave run in the verse after the solo!! That whole show is brilliant, and there isn't a familiar tune to the crowd played!!!

The Fillmore East was the best rock hall ever and I miss it more than any woman I've ever known. It was in the East Village in NYC and I saw the Allmans with Duane there, Johnny Winter, Jethro Tull, Santana, Zappa and many other amazing acts. Best light show anywhere in the world and the top tickets were $5.50 which wasn't even a lot of money then! Great acoustics and not a bad seat in the house. Look up Filmore East on google and you'll learn more about it. Bill Graham was a class act!

Naaaah, first of all if it's Hendrix it's ALL good! He was awesome even on a bad night and the version of "Stone Free" from the 2 CD Fillmore set has one of the best guitar solos ever! Sounds like he was playing underwater and in outer space at the same time. I swear, he was conjuring up spirits on that one! The classic version of "Machine Gun" is easily his best, but the 2 alternate versions on this disc is nothing to sneeze at either.

I'm a die hard jimi hendrix fan but the cd you are referring to is one i bought because I want to own everything by Jimi but I I really think it is a bad cd from a bad concert. I love the first Band of gypsys CD but I can't imagine why you think the double cd is great. In my opinion Isle of Wight was even better and that was a poor concert as well. Nowhere near berkeley and The Royal Albert Hall.

Further to my post a month ago, I believe this video to be authentic and from the June '70 Baltimore concert which I attended and have four photos of (see my video by entering Hendrix and Baltimore in the search engine). I freeze framed the video images, and the outfits worn by Hendrix (purple shirt) Mitchell (top with a big star on it) and Cox (white pants) are consistent with my photos. Some more observations. I was 18 and sober when I went. Was sitting slightly to the left of centre stage but a reasonable way back. The guy who took the photos was closer to the stage. The audience reaction was positive and enthusiastic. If you look at the photos from my video of Foxy Lady my best guess is that he was not wearing a hat (at least when the photos were taken). I also kept the newspaper ad for the concert, included in the video. Would welcome your comments.

I like the 1970 tour bootlegs because it's his most creative work. He didn't seem able or willing to try new material when Noel was on bass. These new songs were still being crafted as he played them live so he played with so much more enthusiaism. The ideas that would come to him, all the possibilites, rejuvenated him. Listen to the berkeley version, rec'd just two weeks earlier, and compare to this. He's so much more comfortable and in the groove. Think the studio version was rec'd 06/17/70

I attended this concert (when I lived in the US '69 to '71) and have four photos taken there, but can't tell if this video was it. My photos indicate that Jimi did not wear a hat as stated in another post. He just played without the theatrics of his early career (although he played with teeth once, at the end of a song, perhaps Voodoo Child). My dad, not a Hendrix fan, and who is now 81, took me there, as I did not drive. He has shocked a few people telling them he saw Hendrix live.

No feces,or urine was noted in the report I read? Just copious amountts of vomit at scene with an partially obstucted airway which was suctioned out to allow for ventilations performed by the medics on scene but obviously unsuccessful. I've performed this procedure several times myself. The lungs are full of liquid due to aspiration, very messy! Sad he died that way alone. Over 1000 people died that year from the same scenario.

Bummer!!! No Sound!!! But hey I was there!!This was my very first concert I attended. The show inluded Vanilla Fudge and two other bands and I if I remember..It was hosted by Humble Harve, a local DJ who was convicted of murdering his wife...(side note). Anyway I still remember everyone jumping into the moat located in front of the stage. What a night Thanks for the film....

This concert was quite amazing! The 1st act on was an Irish act called Eire Apparent, 2nd - Soft Machine, 3rd - Vanilla Fudge, finally the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Wish there was a DVD. Hendrix opened with "The Call of the Black Panther" - an orgy of feedback.

Nope! as it turns out the third act was in fact the "Soft Machine" the suggestion of the Mamas & Papas although good? was not who played! However a little trivia for youz... jimi did in fact open a concert for the Monkeys...to the shock, and horror of all the teeny bobbers, and there parents in attendance that night! I'm sure this concert will remain as quite possibly the most mismatched in history.

He took 9 Vesperx- he had a lot of wine in his lungs and stomach-- but his alchol level was low. perhaps Monika freaked out and tried to revive him by pouring wine into his mouth. Calling Eric (panic or just tring to CYA)-Who Knows- Police and Ambulance men state that no one but Jimi was at the flat (No Monica). Monkia was sued by Katy E in the early '90s in a libel suit. He was dead long before the ambulance men arrived. Being alive and placed in an upright position with his head back in the ambulance- tring to vomit-- was simply speculation. The ambulance men were tracked down in the '90s, hence the information. Doctors say that he had been dead for several hours upon the arrival to the hospital.

wow and holy shit !!! THIS was my first concert. I've seen hundeds and hundreds over the past 39 years and NUTHIN EVER topped this one. WHat could. I also remember Lee Michaels, Taj Mahal, the loading Zone, Fat Mattress. I don't think Poco was there but could be -(I saw them open for the Airplane in SD in 72) - the PA went out for about 10 minutes during and Mitch Mitchell kept playing -my all time fav drummer and of course Jimi is my all time fav guitarist by far . Thanks for Something !!!!

This looks like local news footage- the quick clip of Fat Mattress opening then the highlights of Jimi..."People jammed the stadium today to see..." It looks like he's playing Voodoo Chile, he's soloing off the 12th fret and his movements fit the tempo he usually played the song. Odd that it's during the day, at this point he was paid to headline and there's light rigging for the evening performances.
