Oh, c'mon everybody. The Band is The Band. Five, great, talented men. They've made beautiful music. I don't like when somebody is bitching about any one of them. Robertson has his drawbacks, but who hasn't? He is only a man. For me, as listener, important is that he's great guitarist, performer and lyricsist also. But every one from The Band is/was. And I like Robertson voice- especially in "Bessie Smith". [I was born too late!]

I agree. A lot of people, who are Band fans, seem to enjoy bitching about Robertson, whilst conveniantly forgetting that a lot of their great songs wouldn't exist without him. And, he is a great guitarist. Anyone Richard Thompson admires has to be, cos Thompson is just about the greatest player I've seen!

in the last waltz according to levon helm, robertsons mike was switched off 'to avoid what happened at woodstock'.... i'm guessing that means he sang like shit... but all that straining 'singing' in the last waltz was all for show. a lot of stuff was overdubbed later, too, according to helm!

I have, however, watched The Last Waltz and am absolutely certain that he is not singing. On a number of tracks he doesn't seem to be in synch and he is standing too far away from the microphone to be heard. Plus, it's impossible to hear his voice anywhere on The Last Waltz.

I love the scene before this number (not shown here). He was coaxed out to do this tune, impromptu and totally unscheduled. He spends a moment talking to the crowd before he begins, and is CLEARLY tripping his nutsack off! Laughing, freaking out a little, he's obviously blown away by the size of the crowd and rambles and stammers a bit. Very genuine and funny! Saw him in a small venue where I live about two weeks ago with David Grisman. They were great!

I thoroughly enjoyed the Woodstock concert on film when it was shown in the cinemas (called movie houses back then) around the same time that I began tripping on Chicago and B,S & T. What I didn't know for many years was that B,S & T actually performed at Woodstock! I only found out about 15 years ago so now I'm ecstatic that their Woodstock performances are here. Anybody know why B,S & T was cut out of the film's final cut? It would've been a blast watching 'em on the movie screen!

As I remember David Clayton Thomas was the only member not a graduate of Juliard? My God that man can sing. And What a scream! Great song. One of my all time favorites. I too saw this band, twice, at the Fillmore East "back in the day" and was completely blown away by them. One show in particular, in early '69, would have made a great live album. They opened with "Where Did My Baby Go?" with Butterfield on piano, and ended with "Keep on Moving" and then "Born Under a Bad Sign" as the encore, with Buzzy Feiten playing amazing guitar. In the almost forty years since this band played together, I haven't heard anything else that I've liked nearly as much.
