Dude, Bashimet is like my new hero! But, God i get so frustrated with the fancy camera work. It's awesome how the orchestra follows the Bashimet and Vengerov without a conductor, but the camera didn't once focus on the concert master. I was hoping to see more communication between Bashimet, Vengerov and the concertmaster but the camera kept focusing elsewhere.

one of the best violinist team up with the best Violist.... I found that Bashment almost never perform from memory?? anyone notice it? I was there at his premier recital in USA some 20 years ago at New England Conservatory (boston), he played the whole recital with music. He did that for almost all his performance including those with major orchestra. As great as him, does he has problems remembering scores??

Bashmet forever! Vengerov is kindof a cocky looking bloke and prickish, and Bashmet is totally puting up with him, esp. around 3 minutes. V shakes his big head so much, but it might just be his instrument is so small. ;)

I don't like Vengerov that much but this Mozart is amazing and the way both Bashmet and Vengerov are different in their playing - I love it.

In a way the camera work echoes the communicative ambient onstage - two soloists rather than a dialogue. I love at 3.25 - Vengerov finishes his passage rather brilliantly and flashes a glance at Bashmet, it seems to me expecting some kind of smile, or spirit of fun, but gets a stern face from Bashmet - Vengerov does an almost imperceptible double take, as he checks to make sure ! Bashmet doesn't look like a lot of fun to work with, and the result is a little like two cockerals in competition.

Wow - that's SO interesting! Vengerov's playing style actually makes Bashmet's style sound introverted! A real shame the cameraman couldn't just film from the front and capture more of the interaction between the two though. One of the chief beauties of this piece is the way the two soloists have to communicate and mirror each other's phrasing during the performance. I've heard that aspect balanced much more thrillingly than this, but this is lovely nonetheless.

I used to think that the violas are insignificant, considering the fact that they don't enjoy as many as repertoires as the violins do. I really admire violists after I have switched to playing the viola - it's a challenge.

I would also like to amend my post a little: I think Mozart would be impressed with this. Vengerov and Bashmet's interpretations are dazzling and powerful. They brought their own style into it while keeping Mozart's alive. This sounds lush and emotional rather than dry and springy to me. However much I love this recording, I think I'm going to die if I dont get my hands on the Anne-Sophie Mutter/ Yuri Bashmet recording of this. Bashmet is god. =]

the person playing directs :) it happens quite often, although it is usually done with smaller orchestras for pieces such as mozart, beethoven etc. it is in many ways probably better this way as it forces the orchestra to actually listen to, pay attention to, and follow the soloist, and gives him the chance to impress his, how to say, musical ideas up the orchestra without the influence of the conductor.
