With all due respect, Miles Davis IS jazz. Whether he's high or not, here is not the is issue. Nobody's perfect. Let's judge him on his legacy alone. Singlehandedly, he was at the forefront of every major jazz genre of the last 50 years, because he STARTED cool jazz in the 50s, modal jazz in the 60s and jazz rock fusion in the 70s. The first jazz musician with rock star status. Wynton Marsalis patterned his early albums AFTER Davis's 60s albums.

You're the one that's retarded, swedishpirates. Technically, some of Miles' best playing was from about 1968-1971. I don't think that Miles was high all the time when he performed during this period, but would you discount any of Charlie Parker's recordings because he may may have been high while making them? Or any of Lee Morgan's, for that matter?

Flying Foo Balls I heard that he raised his head and trumpet because as you blow on a trumpet fluid builds up and it equalled out that fluid. Miles could hear every note and distortion. You will see him also go to the side and empty out that fluid through the release valve. Miles was the man. Some people dont like him ((Stanley Crouch) but that was part of his style. Coolest muthafucka there was. Pro or con, he had style, his own.

The style developed in the mid-60's by the Second Quintet was based on "linearity", not "running chords" which was the Bebop "style" [i.e., Clifford Brown, Dizzy, Parker, et al].....If you need to learn Bebop, as Jaco said, you gotta learn the "heads"...Do you know who wrote "Donna Lee" by chance??? I'd be interested in your answer....

One thing you need to understand was that Miles' playing underwent many changes between his start with "Bird" in the 40's and his "Second Great Quintet" with Hancock, Shorter et al...in the 60's Miles wanted to transcend "style": Except perhaps Dorham [in his mid-60's Blue Note sessions] the other players you cited had only one specific "sound", or, "style"...Trust me, if you try to play Dizzy/Bird/Bud "licks" over the changes to "Dolores", "Sorcerer", or "ESP", you will sound out of place...

Probably not everyone knows this interesting tidbit. During the performances of this remarkable quintet, Miles would communicate countless shifts in the music, tempo, feel, dynamics, with the use of little melodic codes. That's what enabled them to seamlessly coordinate the metamorphic development of the improvisations. I really believe this to be the height of western civilization in terms of spontaneous creation.

Hold on.....your original points were not incorrect...yes, there was a "moment to moment" response because this unit functioned as almost ONE "person" [their collective "E.S.P." was THAT good] everyone was listening [really hard!] to each other.....and, chord changes may have been modified to appropriately support the soloist [or Miles, in his melody statement]...but no matter how many chords were added [or subtracted] as they went from point A to point B, the larger structural architecture....

correct me if i'm wrong but out there somewhere is an interview with the legend John Coltrane, an innovator of improvisational free form jazz, and when asked about what it was like to perform with monk he replied something to the effect of "he is truly the hardest to follow and you find yourself struggling to keep up with him." just paraphrasing. but i found that shocking until i went and listened to monk. he is a true genius and virtuoso!!

If you are referring to the video, yes the pianist is Chick Corea.....Additionally, this band is a.k.a. "The Lost Quintet", since it apparently was never commercially recorded by Columbia Records. [However, there are bootlegs out there...e.g. Juan Pins Festival of 1969, a pre-Bitches Brew performance.....

I saw them a few months ago, and I have to say they are the premier modern music quartet playing. I hesitate to call their music jazz because of the brilliant composing skills of Wayne Shorter who continues to break new ground in his music. Yes they're all great players, but it's the music and that's Wayne's and no one else. There will never be another saxophonist who can write and play like that!

Four great musicians, undoubtly, and one overall, Mr. Shorter... but: is it sufficient to make great and interesting music? I'm not sure. Somebody speaks of "almost complete improvisation"...mmm...I think it's not correct; they use rhitmic patterns, bass "obligato", and so on. I think that also the Great Shorter follows the market demand of "acoustic jazz", without a real autonomous idea.

the bootlegs man, you have to find the bootlegs and there really hard to find. on of the best in my opinion is the WSQ at the north sea jazz festival in 2006. my favorite mass produced recording with this group is beyond the sound barrier, but its all genius. if you interested in just brian blade, check out the two recordings with his fellowship.

All of this is amazing, but let me speak of Wayne Shorter in particular: while soloing (everywhere, but in this group especially), his phrasing is absolutely other-worldly. This video provides an amazing example of this. what about john scofield, i've listened to some new albums, and there's nothing. but what about the george duke billy cobham band, there he was real, he don't have a real part but add some to the band, i think that it's the best to do. with george duke happens something special, he really knows, but in his solo studio albums i don't like them, but he with other people creating, he is god. nothing like zappa's inca roads, i think the same with ponty, the best play i have of him it's with zappa.

You didn't answer my question... what jazz are you listening to today that you think there is some quantum leap between old jazz and today? Have you heard Kenny Garrett or Joshua Redman or any of the giants who are still with us? Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner. They are all making music in the same vein as the jazz of the 60s. And besides, mainstream jazz has always been lead instrument playing the singer role with structure. Go listen to the first and second Miles Davis quintets.

smooth jazz is nothing but r&b played with a saxophone. It's recycled music. What happen to the improvising? This is freestyle jazz at it's finest. New jazz is structure with the lead instrument playing the "singer" role. And honestly, is that really jazz to you? Compare old school to new school and tell me what you think?

Ok, I can understand rap and rock, but what jazz are you listening to that you call it completely commercialize and mainstream? If you listen to smooth jazz stations you might hear more commercial sounds but if you go find the live acts, I can't find much commerical music.

Miles was the great musical innovator of our time over many generations. In honor of Miles, I named my son Miles Davis. After seeing Miles 'live' a few times I understood that he was the greatest musician of our time. SO CREATIVE! I couldn't sleep for three days after seeing Miles for the first time! It's so strange that most of his work he dedicates to L. Ron. Even from the 70s. And of course a lot of his albums were inspired by his books. Amazing player though, I got into him mostly from the allstar drummers he plays with.

Live at the Newport Jazz Festival 1958 & 1963 on Columbia Jazz Masterpieces double disc on which a beautiful performance of Lite Blue can be heard. This is IMO one of the sweetest melodies Monk ever composed. It's like a child's love.
