I agree. For both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness there was a big gap between Sham and the third place horse. Sham was amazing too, he just came along at the wrong time - to race Secretariat.

Sham would've almost surely had the TC were it not for Secretariat. His jockey was told to stay with Secretariat from the start at Belmont. Ran Sham too hard for too long. With no Secretariat he'd have been run a bit easier and won the Belmont. Someone mentioned Forego. GREAT horse. But remember that Forego was also the same age as Secretariat. He was held out of races where he'd have had to face Secretariat. Wasn't close when they did face each other (4th in Derby).

The only reason Secretariat finished second on that list was because one person on the seven-person panel didn't even place him in the top ten. William Nack was on that panel, and he never found who it was who ranked Secretariat that low. He thought the person didn't know what he or she was talking about. Nobody takes that poll seriously.

As much as I love Dr.Fager(in my opinion the greatest miler in history),he would have had no chance going against Sec at this distance,maybe at a 1 1/4 miles,but not at a 1 1/2 miles! As a current Thoroughbred Jockey, I have most admiration for this AMAZING ATHLETE! horses that we ride usually take atleast a month and a half off inbetween races. Secretariat ran 3 races in 5 weeks with the BEST horses in the world. VERY FEW HORSES have EVER won the Triple Crown. What is even MORE crazy is the fact, that this athlete Won by 31 lenghs.(length is one horse, nostrils, to tail) This has NEVER been seen and I will take to my death on the track (lol) that it will NEVER be seen again!

Carly, what is this from? ESPN or something? I don't see any of those rare RACING MOW films that I thought ESPN had access to. Also curious because some of this is misleading. It's safest to say MOW (and others) were left standing at the start in the Sanford, possibly backed up or skewed. Also, "older horses" is misleading as he only ever met Sir Barton once, the only elder. (He did win the JC Stakes for elder, but none entered the race.)

It is pointless (although at times fun) to argue about who was better than who. Man o' War's impact was felt all over the world. He played a part in Britain finally abolishing the ridiculous Jersey Act. Which basically made almost all US TB's non pure bloods in the British stud book. They finally gave in when US and French breds(they used some US blood) were coming over and winning top races in Britain. Funny thing was that was why they did it the first place,they feared we would clean house.

For many people who know nothing about horse racing,all you have to do is mention the name Man o' War,and they will know exactly who he was. He was an American icon. He was also a very influencial sire(contrary to some who critized Riddle for keeping him a private Stallion),Man o" War's blood is still instrumental in the modern Tb. That along with his race record makes him a true TB God.

man of war is my horese great great grandpa on his mothers side then on my dads his grandpa was northern dancer. so u would think he would be a great race horse but sadly did not meet the times by 2 seconds. hes beautiful and looks exactly like man of war. i love him though an dhe has the personality and heart of gold. =]

Of course Man o' War didn't win the Triple Crown, but the book has nothing to do with the DVD. Man o' War was included on the DVD because he was a magical horse and an integral part of racing history, hence the bonus History Channel DVD "Win, Place, Show: The History Of Horse Racing". Take care.

What I loved most of all was the California race crowds true love and respect for him. Even when he was years away from the races. I've heard the Silky Sullivan expressions to illustrate a top closing effort. The way he closed in that race was to say in the least, incredible. Some would say he just caught tired horses,well to be that far back at that stage of the race,he did way,way more than catch tired horses,he literally exploded. Not many can do that,what a nice horse!

Yes, the glory days are gone, and we likely will never again see horses the likes of Silky, Secretariat, Bid, etc. Racing now is still quite good, but really nowhere near the quality of the early 90's and earlier. Sad to ponder. I can only hope the american thoroughbred is again invigorated with stamina AND speed someday. That said, I'll be watching that beautiful big chestnut, Curlin, VERY closely; he may go undefeated! He may be a key component in the breed's re-invigoration. Have a good week!

Good points about his early speed and stamina. The Slew was quite the monster horse. Superb ability, strangely under-rated. I rate him in the top 4 of all-time. Take care.

Best Derby win ever, no doubt. Slow break and then rushed up into the lead into very hot opening fractions. Pressed a 45 opening half after breaking almost dead last and then had enough to open up in the stretch before being put on coast mode late. Very fewe other horses could have pulled that race off in that style. He probably ran about a 44 flat opening half given how he broke.

I was nine as well when I remember this race so vividly as if it was yesterday! My sister, ten then, picked Seattle Slew to win and the rest is history. But RDR has and always will be one of my favorites, along with Vigors. Do you remember him?

I picked Run, Dusty, Run to win it all in 77. Of course, I was only nine years old at the time, so I was hardly what you would call a TB expert. I simply did what a boy did to choose. I watched the horses on their journey to be loaded in the gate, and picked the best looking one with the coolest name (Run, Dusty, Run of course). Didnt choose too bad I guess. Almost but not quite. The strange thing is that this video has been posted since April of last year, and yet it only has about 3,000 views (and I'm probably responsible for 100 of them...hehehehehe.) I thought there were alot more certified, card carrying Slew freaks in the world like me. I guess not. Maybe it's just because my very first truly memorable sporting events were Slews TC races in '77. ValerianSoup *shrugs*...something doesn't seem right. Awesome video cf1970 (and thanks for the post), but, all I can say is: WOW! WHAT A GOOD LOOKIN' HORSE! I had forgotten how handsome Slew was. People may argue which horse is the "best ever", but there's one thing no one can deny: Slew was a work of art. About as perfectly built as they come, IMHO.

I totally agree. Slew is one of the chosen few. Horse racing needs a shot in the arm like this again. We need a Triple Crown winner in the worst way. That said, I want the winner to be nothing short of legendary. That would be a dream! Thank you for the kind comments.

YES! This is 1 of the RARE clips we never get to see - except I saw them once on 1 of the ESPN shows years ago. I don't think stinkin' ESPN ever made a "MOW" show even though he was huge and was 80th or so on their 100 list, but they had NON-Sir Barton racing clips on I think "Secretariat" show, and maybe some other racing show. The post-parade is actually a camera shot of MOW being returning to the grandstand area after the race - and the infield crowd was already breaking up. It is MOW - not War Admiral. Look at the profiles of the car & their roofs in the forescreen as MOW and the lead rider walk past. They are 1920s vintage cars; not models from the late 1930s. The same cars are panned by the camera as MOW and Sir Barton race by together after the first turn.

Correct -- his facts were wrong -- probably another teleprompter cue-card error. MOW had already faced and defeat the 1920 Kentucky Derby winner -- Paul Jones -- a month before in the Potomac Handicap held at Havre De Grace race track in Maryland on Sept. 18, 1920- MOW spotted Paul Jones 24 pounds, who finished 18-1/2 lengths behind, in last place.

Part 2 of 3 - during the mid-1970's, I read an article in a 1927 racing manual that I pulled from a shelf at the main building of the NY Public Library in Manhattan. I recall the writer's name was W.O. McGeehan. He stated that the chart of the race contained a typographical error -- the chart said MOW won by 7 lengths instead of correctly saying "seven-teen" lengths. Certainly the film of the race visually suggests MOW's winning margin over Sir Barton was greater than 7 lengths.

Part 1 of 3 - The commentator is Frank Wright - died in 1987- a NY trainer who co-hosted a weekly Saturday TV program called "Racing from Acqueduct" on NY's TV channel 9. The show was co-sponsored by the NYRA and the NYC Off-track Betting Corp. Wright committed several gaffes -- no doubt he was the victim of a teleprompter's cue-card. He should have said Sir Barton was the previous year's winner of the Kentucky Derby and the Triple Crown.

I'm assuming you're replying to Christy5252. I'm well aware of the history of film in the silent era, hence my statement of "relatively" new. Film was still basically in it's infancy, sound and picture-wise, in relation to what it ultimately became. My point was that when I replied a month ago, I simply wasn't aware if MOW's films had been shown in a theater or not. Turns out that some MOW footage actually was featured in theaters. It'd be incredible to see that on a big screen, especially now!

That's the way this film was originally. I didn't want to compromise the quality by lightening it either. I don't have the money right now for a high-powered video editing suite that does not degrade quality when saving a modified video file. I wish I could afford a program like Adobe's most expensive one, and someday I'm sure I will. I'm sorry you can't see it that well, but please try to enjoy it for what it is. Theaters DID exist back then. It was silent, but movies did exist, believe it or not. We simply don't much care to watch anything pre-1930, the full-sound era, so they have been neglected and the impression left that studios didn't exist nor big movies made, especially before 1920. However, there is no reason this couldn't have been shown in a regular theater as news.

Thats true. Man O War's only loss came in 1919. He was supposedly by all counts had his back turned towards the rope that wasnt suppose to be lifted until they were all faced forward. Well 1919, the same year as the Blak Sox scandal, you could only imagine the shady things going on back then. Esoecially in horse racing.

I think that in 1920 the general public likely didn't have that opportunity due to the fact that it was simply a horse race and on film, which was still relatively new at that time. Then again, it was the great Man o' War that captured the imagination of much of the country, so who knows? It may very well have been shown to a select group, at the very least. Take care.
