Tom Waits has a hell of a voice. This music is more beautiful and real than any of the pitch-adjusted, synthesized trash you hear today. Vocals "corrected" with Autotune make me want to scream. It's so candied and artificial, it's nauseating. A lot of people are bothered by a rough voice like this, but I love it. It's so real and raw, unlike most new music. When I listen to someone singing, I want to hear a human voice, with all of it's flaws and nuances, not some smoothed over syrupy crap.

I think the best kind of Tom Waits video is him in the studio making the record. Tom covers his eyes a lot in his vids...and many magazine shoots...or he's standing on one foot. Nobody ever wants to talk about it. I think this is one of his most successful videos. Some of the others from the 90's and later have such a muted low budget thing going that I think they dilute his presence and power. Thought I wanted a In The Coliseum video but really it doesn't need one. Imagery is already built in.

Interesting song. The musical change that takes place at 2:42 is really fantastic. It is so unpredictable after taking into consideration the way the song really starts! From then on, the song really sounds catchy. It is like passing through a dark cave and then finally seeing the light.

John Fahey's Revenant Records produced an amazing boxed set of Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band, titled "Grow Fins [Rareties 1965-1982]" Revenant #210. The set itself is a piece of CD-release art, with a large case, a pull-out book (reminding me of 78 r.p.m. packaging, as it probably did Fahey) and each CD in a sleeve that is part of the book. Revenant released the Charlie Patton collection and John Fahey's The Red Cross. I think it was Fahey's company goal to give certain artists their due.

Wonderful to compare Beefheart to Fahey, two favorites. I did not know he dug the captain. I like dylan but somehow the same hyopothosis does not resonate for me - perhaps because he was less driven by the blues vs the great white folk players like Guthrie who had their version of the blues already. Fahey and Beefheart listened obsessively to huge numbers of black blues 78s. Fahey and Beef were tortured neurotic geniuses who found their idiosyncratic salvation in weird blues. Dylan is saner.

The three white men who reinvented the blues (rather than just becoming stylists of black blues form ala Clapton) are: John Fahey, Bob Dylan, and Captain Beefheart. Someone I know took Fahey to a Dylan concert in about 1999. He listened with his eyes closed and head down. My friend wondered if he made a mistake in taking him until the end when John said it was the best concert he'd ever attended. And we know he dug the Captain.

I agree. I don't want to diss Kottke, who's certainly very talented, but for me they were never remotely in the same league. Robbie Basho was a more likely contender, but still - Fahey stands alone.

According to the directors,Davis arrived with a coloured metal trumpet totally inappropriate to the video's aesthetic.Thus an old one was acquired from a pawn shop. Throughout filming Miles stripped it down and restored it to a playable condition. At the end, it was returned to the shop!Imagine!Where is it now I wonder? Cheap this video may have been, but it gave me a way into Jazz and helped me to understand it as a continually evolving form rather than something dead, eclipsed by pop.

I like the video--except where the digitized patterns are supposed to be coming from the movements of his hands. They didn't take the time to coordinate it as well as they could have, and the animation images could have been smoother, less pixelated. Miles said he primarily didn't like the video because the record company did it on the cheap. He had wanted the solarized type of colors evident in the film "Wolfen" to be used. Thanks for posting this version of the original clip.

The latest CD "The Best of John Fahey 1959-1977" includes the 23+ minute Fare Forward Voyagers. (The earlier "best of' was made in the days of vinyl so had much less material.) There is a re-released CD "Fare Forward Voyagers" with two other tracks. I'd suggest the "Best" collection to any but complete collectors. It's the SAME Fare Forward Voyagers track. All the CD rereleases are jamemed with alternate takes and rerecordings as well as originals. Wonderful work by Henry Kaiser and others.
