The bass player is actually Eddie Jones. Although Lester Young isn't present here, he was in the same CBS studio earlier that day, backing Billie Holiday with Roy Eldridge, Doc Cheatham, Vic Dickenson, Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster and Gerry Mulligan, amongst others. Hence the reason Mulligan etc. sit in with Basie's Band. Holiday herself is seen appreciating the band's version of "Dickie's Dream", which with the third title "I Left My Baby" are on a Gerry Mulligan DVD called "Darn That Dream"

Betty Carter was a painter with her vocals. She would paint with broad strokes across her canvas. Her colors were always vibrant. Her emotions would be very expressive. She was another instrument, that would twist,turn, and blend with her musicians. Betty Bee Bop was a rhythm machine, with excellent timing and phrasing. Betty was always true to her first love, jazz music. She never betrayed the art and sold out for fame&fortune. Betty Carter remains one of the legends of jazz.

Bobby Watson remains one of my favotire players. Eddie Simon was just a 16 year old kid in Philly when I first knew him. This tune i think was first recorded on Art Blakey's "Album of the Year" in 1980, a great great record by the way! I remember chilling with Bobby Watson at La salle College in the early 80's and all he could do was talk up George Coleman! :-) Beautiful cat...

When I expanded my tastes into jazz, I went into that lovely used LP store on Baldwin ST in Toronto, and the wonderfully enthuasiastic owner lady said "this is the one", and so I bought "Inside Betty Carter." Now ain't that good customer service! When a few years later my little kids (at the time 7 & 5) were into "The Sound of Music", I got them to listen to Betty's recording of 'My Favorite Things.' They killed themselves laughing at the prestissimo speed ... darn good music lesson that day!

I really understand your state of mind after listening to his statements, but I guess that this is a problem of a special sensitivity of musicians. They want the world to become better and just, but they ignore such obvious facts like the ones that socialism isn't effective, that comunism is responsible for many deaths (for example leadres like Mao, Stalin, Che). Charlie is my favorite bass player, too. The bass playing in those early Ornette albums is heavenly and sublime. As far as his stupid politics are concerned, well...a lot of artists (musicians, actors, etc) who are inflicted with this, uh...problem. You're right I guess. Maybe I should put politics aside and just enjoy the music--if possible. I still love Charlie's bass playing, and shouldn't have been so rough on him earlier, but his politics really piss me off.

In my opinion Charlie's view of the politilac matters is quite naive. Of course he believe in some modern superstitions, like socialism, human rights etc. I'm not going to say anything impolite, because I really love this music. But we shouldn'x mix music with politics. I'm a libertarian, I love capitalism but I don't care about musicians' (or "n's"?) point of view.

Interesting interview. I know Haden from his Ornette days, and I own avery special CD on which he plays with Hank Jones (just the two of them). They play all sorts of negro spirituals and church songs, like 'Abide with me'and 'What a friend we have in Jesus'. They don't play them tongue-in-cheek, but are sincere in their love for this repertoire. I revere that CD.
