Natalie and Rita are wonderful in the film.But then I liked everyone in the cast. Rita did sing America!, but this number was dubbed by Betty Wand,who had the lower registers required. Natalie,who in real life was a sophisticated,talented actress ,plays the sweet Maria beautifully. And with Marni Nixon's gorgeous voice....Bravo! Same with the naive,but adorable Tony,played by Richard Beymer.Jim Bryant was voice double.Another perfect matching of talents. A great film!

Sharks win style points and actual dancing, but the Jets bring a greater sense of fun and energy. The slide out that Riff and girlfriend (? Graziella maybe?) do, and the lead up to it makes me grin every time I see it. Truthfully, it took me a few viewings to realize that he threw his jacket off and it wasn't a continuity error. What an amazing scene.

The old great musicals are so moving it's impossible not to cry when you hear the songs. When I saw a revival of the King and I (with Nureyev) I found myself crying every time a new song began. They don't compose music and write lyrics like this anymore. At least we have them all whenever we want on YT.

You know what? Upon further review, I noticed that I was wrong 3 days ago on the character name: Rita Moreno played Anita. I read somewhere that the(then)rather delectable Richard Beymer found very little off-screen interaction with Maria/Natalie Wood. They barely spoke, except when the script was involved. And they looked so taken with each other in the film! But then again, she was a really big star at the time. And who knows what issues she may have been dealing with. Anyway,the film was great. Enough said!

I love this musical and the movie is great. Riff and Bernardo are the best characters in this play. Is Tony's actor really singing?? I think he is. But Maria in this version isn't right??

FYI, they aren't the ONLY triple threats in the world today. I don't think it should be re-made, especially with two pop-y teen "icons" that have already been in three movies together. This song is an insult to Puerto Rican women. If a man ever sings that song in front of me, I'd be insulted. If Maria's skin was darker, Tony wouldn't have fallen in love with her in the first place considering the fact that the majority of Puerto Ricans are conscious about skin color for economic status (not to sound racist since I'm not, but it's true).
