well I have looked at Tim Halcomb's vid of this, and, NO, there aren't any mistakes with the exception of maybe one note, but he combined his style with Guthrie's and didn't want to do an exact duplicate anyway. For the most part, he played it right with a few embellishments. get jealous if you want, but he did a fantastic job and you can check those other accounts they aren't him! SO STOP HATING BEFORE I GET EM MY WITCH DOCTOR TO CAST EM A SPELL ON YOU! :-)

However I have to tell you that if Guthrie were to transcribe Oleo, from any performance, he could and he would also play it with astonishing feel and accuracy. you're right satchfan, Guthrie plays this and everything else at a genius level and yes more feel than anyone in his style of playing. But, I got angry when I first came here because some were saying the old greats like Pat Martino suck. Pat Martino, if he were young, would be able to do everything and MORE than any of today's guitarists and he did do MORE in Jazz. Pat Martino is a genius and I don't think I've ever seen ONE cover of "oleo" on Youtube why? I love his music and he is a legend!

I didnt know Guthrie govan was good like this. I knew he had some technique... speed an whatever like a lot of guys... but this shit is fuckin musical ! Real playing, great feel and articulation. This guy is a serious musician, not some speedy jack-off. he could probably fit in with some modern jazz hook-ups. He has got the feel to play with a cat like Herbie Hancock... this dude is real.

Then for the Aalt (Just an Altered V chord) he'll use the A altered scale (7th mode of melodic minor scale). That and the stuff from the Bb7 chord are most of the outside stuff you hear. Very cool progression. The altered V chord just means a dominant7 chord with any alterations you want, basically (#9, b9, #11, b13, etc.). Of course you don't have to follow all these rules, just guidelines. Message me if you want more info.

The progression goes like this: dmin7-dmin7-dmin7-dmin7-dmin7-dmin7-Aalt-Aalt-dmin7-dmin7-gmin7-Bb7-dmin7-Aalt. On all the dmin7s he plays mostly D dorian. Then when the gmin7s (iv) come he'll switch to D aeolian cuz that's the same as G aeolian. Then on the Bb7 (bVI) chord you can use lots of stuff. You could do Bb mixolydian but in this case Bb lydian dominant (the 4th mode of melodic minor scale) would sound better and that's what he mostly plays.

Dude, what a non-answer. Anyway man, I have the backing track and its in D Aeolian (F major scale); But he uses C major scale as well, which would make it a D Dorian (this only works in certain moments of the progression); Also, he plays "outside" but im not really sure which scale is he using to create that effect, I'd have to slow it down or listen to it carefully or whatever. Hope this helps!

Pick hard and semi-mute the string immediately with your thumb (lol don't stop the vibration completely). Try plucking your high E string and semi-muting it with one of your fingers immediately after (on the 5,7,12 frets. Why? They are the easiest) to get a harmonic. This is essentially whats being done, just past the neck. Search youtube for "Pinch-Harmonics" if my little bit didn't help. Cheers from Canada!

Now just to let you know, I've played drums profesionally and have played guitar since I was 12, I'm now 43. I was raised with a elder brother who was a professional rock & blues guitarist in numerous bands. Well, his playing is superb all over but while holding the Gibson you could see him as more likely part of a legendary soulful orchestra of some kind. Shredding is ok too but even Atkins managed to sweep pick a Gretch back in 55! When reaching this level of technique a more relaxed approach could be beneficial etc.

in my opinion every single guitarist is different, every guitarist has a different voice and every guitarist plays in a different way. personaly im a blues guitarist, and ive always played music as its felt. its always come to me. i think practicing to a metronome is a good idea. i went through a phase of playing to a click track and it helped. but yeah, every guitarist does things differently. thats my opinion anyway =)

err if u change the clicks of a metronome to a single kick and snare what do u get? thats right..a 4/4 beat so theres no differance between a metronome and drums besides the sounds, and if a drummer is going crazy you cant really play in time with him. also how do u think he got so good at them licks? he didnt just do em, when he was younger he spent hours practising them, same as everyone else, if your just starting out you need to practise to a metronome or u will sound like slop..

Hendrix never shredded? He did as much as his technique would allow. Seriously, he just used to go crazy with his guitar and just rip the fretboard up. One of the biggest show-offs of all time. And in a very very good way. A lot of Hendrix fans don't like other players being technically better, but if Hendrix could have played faster he sure as hell would have. and he'd have loved this. And I wouldn't call this "shredding" anyway. I'd call it being f***ing good at the guitar.
