Well, Sumi-e is how it was first introduced to the English speaking people, just like "Tofu" so you don't say tofu is Japanese and Doufu is Chinese, right? My title is targeted to what the key words, so sumie is more popular than "shuimo hua" in English.

Unfortunately I did not capture that painting process on the video camera. Like very brush painting artist, I have to do a lot of practice, which means lots lots of NGs, before becoming capture a good one on the tape. Practice makes it nearly perfect.

Some tips to beginners: 1)only use couple of drops of sumi ink for each small painting like this one; 2)load your brush with water first, then touch a little bit ink using the brush tip so it will start with dark stroke and then turns to lighter tones. The procedure, if any, is "clean the brush --> load lighter ink --> darker ink". You should repeat this procedure as your brush is exhausted.

How do you get ligher and darker ink? I know you use more water for lighter, but what is the procedure? Do you dip the brush in dark ink, then dip the brush in water? Or do you have different shades of ink in cups? Do you use one brush for dark ink and another brush for lighter, or do you use the same brush and wash in between?

I tell you what I have used.I used a single hard plastic tablecloth the one we use for the breakfast. I made the glue as you show with flavour and allum (my husband uses it for the cuts of the shave) then I put the glue with a large paint brush, I put the newspaper on and press with a large and thick bath brush. then I put the picture on a wood panel as you did, wait until dried.........WOW fantastic!!!!! I used to Chinese Brush Paint years ago and quit because of the difficulty of mounting (I use to use wall paper paste and many times it would leave wrinkles or bubbles and was messy). This looks so much easier! I'm inspired to get out my materials again. Thank you!

If you are in China, you may find a mounting shop very easily. Sorry I don't know what Silicone Release Paper is called in Chinese. You may describe it as ?????(heat sensitive mounting paper).Since it is industry material, it's not likely that you will find in any stationary or art supply stores.
