reading the comments I see some ppl saying that the wingman was trying to protect his leader, but in order to protect him he should be flying by his side, so he could see the spit aproaching the leader and turn into the spit, the in line formation they were flying could have have them both killed if the spit pilot would have aproached from behind and shot down the wing man and then the leader, they wouldnt have known what hit them. no fighter pilot would be flying like that.

The ME109 was pretty evenly matched with the spitfire in that each had about an equal number of strengths and weaknesses. ME109 pilots were generally more experienced, but they had to be since the 109 was more difficult to fly. The only reason that the ME109 didn't rule the day during the battle of Britain is that it could only carry enough fuel for about 15 minutes of fighting time once it got over Britain, so it wasn't as effective at bomber escort as the German command had hoped.

That's myth. Not particulary a 109 problem, rather an inexperient pilot's problem. Put a driver who just learned how to drive a 50cv car to drive a ferrari. What you expect will happen? ;) Spitfire was very hard to take off, having quite a few accidents, about the same 109 had in landings. The numbers of 109 crashes in landings is often exagerated, basicly to tell that british were better than germans, etc etc etc.

Anyone now if the DB 601 is behing built, from a documentary on turbo charged engine I recall one of the commentator that a camechaft from a DB 601 was sent to Rolls Royce for evaluation. in the battle of midway, one crashed zero fighter was rebuilt and scrutinized by US scientists. They found at that zeros have metal fatigue at 20,000 feet and above. So US planes flew since then at higher altitude and brought the fight at that height. Zeros became less maneuverable at that height. But the greatest factor in the war was the INTELLIGENCE. The Spitfire (dunno about the seafire specifically) series actually did see action in the Pacific front. The Zero easily outmaneuvered it. And since the spit pilots were used to being the most agile fighters in the sky they had no experience in high speed vertical fighting against a more maneuverable opponent.

There's also another consideration. If the right prop strikes the ground bits of it are more likely to punch through the fuselage, while the debris from the left engine would be probably thrown away from the plane. In this case the pilot did a superb job and saved both engines.
