Thanks for the discussion betochon. I guess my favorite WWII fighter would have to be the English Hawker Tempest. Hubert Lange, a Me 262 pilot, said: "the Me 262s most dangerous opponent was the British Hawker Tempest ? extremely fast at low altitudes, highly-maneuverable and heavily-armed." Late models even shot down a few MIG15s in Korea that were foolish enough to slow down and try to dogfight with it.

I respect your opinion of the Zero, but I disagree. The Hellcat was faster and could out dive the zero, so in most (not all) cases, the Hellcat could choose its fight. It could also absorb much, much, much more damage than the zero. I would rather be in a Hellcat.

RedHammerSAA, you might be interested to read "WILDCAT VERSUS ZERO AT MIDWAY: TOM CHEEK'S STORY". It's easy to find on Google. It's a true story about a U.S. Navy pilot at Midway who found himself alone in a Grumman Wildcat, attacked by groups of Zero fighters, and forced to dogfight them without aid of radio communications or a wingman. I'm not saying the Zero is a "bad" aircraft, just an overrated one, while the Wildcat and U.S. pilots of that time seem to be underrated by many people.

Correct, and also lack of communications has alot to do with many of their losses, as good as the Zero was, even at the end of the war, most Zero`s never even had radios. Which is one of the reasons their Zero`s failed to gain enough attitude to intercept the very same bombers and torpedo planes that got most of their carriers at midway, thus leaving most of their planes unable to land, and instead crashing (And therefore the enormous losses.) they did great in the dogfights before that though.

I only have two points to make in reply, RedHammerSAA. 1. I didn't say anything at all about which aircraft types the Flying Tigers fought, I just corrected someone else's claim on here that the Japanese had "air superiority" until 1945 (I mentioned the AVG as an example). 2. Sorry, no, the "ignorant Japanese" claim originated from my firsthand experiences with Japanese writers and regular "ignorant Japanese" in face-to-face conversations. Hardly "undocumented" as far as I'm concerned.

the flying tigers fought mostly ki`s, not zero`s or betty`s, most ki`s had weak armament, and were slower.. that "ignorant japanese" claim originated from the americans, stated by history channel in dogfight series, which is better source then your undocumented claim. Jap pilot training wasnt very good either.. The proof: Jap pilots following american planes into a dive.. its folk wits nowadays that when ur enemy dives, u stay upstairs and gain the height advantage in order to zoom & boom..

Um, the Hellcat was matched or superior to the Zero. Also, "Only flown in teams" was picked up from the germans. Its a good strategy, but often fell apart in a fur ball.

No, the first production Hellcats arrived in October, 1943. Even before that, the Japanese did not have "air superiority" or they would not have suffered such heavy losses to the Flying Tigers, or at Guadalcanal, and at Midway. The Hellcat simply speeded up the attrition that was already bleeding the Japanese air forces at the time.

No, I think you're mistaken. That sounds like the typical "Japanese only lost when they were outnumbered" myth I've heard so many times (almost always from a Japanese person). American fighter pilots were outnumbered on many occasions by Japanese fighters and came out the victors. Read some of the Osprey books on our fighter aces. Plenty of proof to dispute your claim.

It's a common claim by ignorant Japanese that the Hellcat was only able to achieve superiority over the Zero because the U.S. captured and studied an A6M. The F6F was actually already in development before the Akutan Zero was recovered. Also, Saburo Sakai, considered one of the best Japanese fighter pilots, met his match against a good U.S. pilot flying a damaged F4F WILDCAT. That same pilot in a Hellcat would've shot Sakai's Zero out of the sky. Pilots being equal, the Hellcat is superior.

actually the Grumman Hellcat was the final design of a series of improvements designed exclusively to kill the elusive A6M Zero. It matched it in speed and agility, and was much more resilent to damage. It was not finished until 1945, up until that time the Japanese still had air superiority

Thanks for explaining your comment. I do see your point. Some of my countrymen can be obnoxious and ignorant at times, especially about WW2. Contrary to popular belief however, most of us have a more balanced view of our roll in WW2. I lost one uncle, killed flying B-17's and another came home alive from flying B-26's. In WW1 we were soldiers for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. I have pride in my country, but I don't think we're better than everyone else.

Im not denying you pride, but ive often seen too much of it from many americans lately regarding ww2, many consider their part in the war as the better side, whilst it wasnt always like that. So this video was what ticked me off, prob the wrong one to do so at but whats done is done, when I see this vid I see americans grinning when they see the japanese plane "get shot" and loving themselves a bit more, when they were actually evenly matched. I just ran then opposite scenario through my mind.

BikerRussell, why do you bring your anti-American attitude to what is essentially an impressive flight demo. Speaking as a U.S. American, I would answer your original question in exactly the same way as betochon. Many Hellcats were shot down by Zeros, and we all know that. The Zero was an excellent plain by any standard. Would you at least allow us a bit of pride for our contribution to the Allied victory in WW2?

American aircraft alone rarely had a chance against Japanese aircraft. Only flown in a team they had a chance! The Zeros were always dangerous, it was manoeuvrable and rises faster.
