Either way, I'd be more in the favor of a death penalty rather than slavery. (And none of this 20 years to get the execution done, either. It'd have to have a much quicker time frame.) As far as confiscating assets goes, you then risk labeling the nation as a supporter of communistic ideals. While I think communism may have some good ideas, they usually break down when applied in practice. Further, what would other nations think of our actions? Politics is all about image.

I agree with some of what you said but the reasons I disagree is why you only get 3 stars. Property taxes, sorry but we need those to pay for local services. I like your vision, and I've had similar thoughts myself. My only problem with this line of thinking is... what is personality, really? How you act, how you behave? But that's a function governed by your brain. It can be changed, manipulated, both through communication, drugs, and other effects. Our memories are stored in our brain. This would mean that if we tried to go before the beginning we would be at the end and if we tried to go after the ending we would be at the beginning. High oil prices will result in lower oil consumption, people will start to seek out newer, cheaper ways to make cars run, to turn the cogs of industry.
