Great performance, but I was waiting for an extended cadenza at the end! The version recorded at Birdland had a huge one that went on for at least half of the actual performance of the number - same at Newport also with Roy Haynes. Still, Coltrane probably had a reason...!

While Impressions does follow the same structure, you're a little bit off on the Blue Train comment... Blue Train actually precedes Kind of Blue by 2 years. Blue Train from 1957 and Kind of Blue from 1959. On Blue Train Coltrane still sounds like he's working around the idea of superimposing as many chords as possible over a single given bar line... the whole "sheets of sound" approach... whereas after Kind of Blue he got into the heavier modal approach... A Love Supreme, Impressions, etc...

Blue Train came out in 1957, Kind of Blue wasn't out until 1959... Coltrane's basis for Blue Train sits more alongside his work on superimposing extended chords on top of a standard set of changes (in Blue Train's case an Eb blues). What Ira Gitler called "sheets of sound." The modal stuff came a bit later on, though...

I hate how they take some really decent 60s jazz and rename it smooth jazz..... stuff like Wes Montgomery, and early George Benson. That stuff is far too good to be tarred with that brush. You MUST have respect for Trane and Dolphy, even if you don't want to sound like them. Even in smooth jazz circles you can tell those who listen to this tuff and those who don't. Not to worry. Nothing special going. When you look at later concerts, you can see that Miles has always been behaving like this. I guess it was just a way of him to focus on a next bunch of notes. Just like that stuff with putting a finger in his ear after his solo. He kept on doing this also in later concerts. But what a wonderful clip by the way. Excellent playing. Thanx for posting.

it's interesting to me how everybody knows everthing here (mind readers). i saw the evil look, too, but couldn't possibly guess what herbie did. as far as miles not liking to be 'tailed,' did you ever hear wynton kelly on the blackhawk recordings? he's all over miles ALL THE TIME and miles loved wynton. what fascinates me about all these clips is how far this band evolved between '64 and the 1967 tapes. amazing.

No he parroted Miles' line. it was just too damn clever for Miles. He doesn't appreciated a guy tailing him musicially. Miles obviously was displeased with Herbie playing right back at him his own idea. I worked with a great jazz trumpeter named Sam Noto who would occasionally tell me how much it pissed him off if an accompanist did what Herbie did. Mark Eisenman

This clip is off the DVD called "Miles Davis Quintet/Milan 1964", publisher Impro-Jazz 2007. It is performed at the "Teatro Dell'Arte" in Milan, Italy - this was the final leg of a European tour. Among the 5 songs on the DVD, is a version of "All Blues" which is different from that on the "Kind of Blue" album. KOB is often cited as being the top selling Jazz album of all time. Rightly so, as it is just so good.

I'm not attacking your credibility, but I kinda want to know where you heard that stuff. I know he met Alice and things went south w/ Naima, but according to C. O. Simpkins' biography, Naima, who contributed a lot to the biography in the way of photos and information, wasn't bitter and they remained friends. Coltrane apparently called her when he got the idea for "A Love Supreme" when he was already with Alice. I have never heard ANYTHING about a mistress.

His first wife... anyway, Wise One was also supposedly written for Naima. I love Trane but after all Naima did for him, helping him kick junk and all that, one wonders what went wrong with them. It's very strange. Trane also had a mistress at the time. He had Naima, Alice and this unidentified white woman running all at the same time. Wild. Seems to contradict a lot of what he was supposed to be about. I still love his music though.

Thanks for these clips of a great master and his amazing band. Perhaps one day they can restore Minton's Playhouse in Harlem, where both younger and older musicians can continue to advance America's classical music. Also, the location of the old Birdland should be converted to a museum dedicated to the legacy of the pioneers of 52nd Street.

"This music" is where you went wrong. Monk is absolutely amazing, I'll admit this isn't one of my favorite pieces either (far from it really), but his phrasing and dissonance complements his work very well normally.

Those who wish to hear Mulligan play tenor sax should get the album, "Getz Meets Mulligan," recorded in 1957. These two greats switched instruments on the first several tracks. Mulligan had a terrific sound on tenor. Now...let's see...where did I put my beret and that book by Jack Kerouac? Ghs

Ravi probably receives decent royalties from this album... At 10% of PPD per unit sold, if they sell at $12 at borders he's making just over a dollar a cd. Sell 30,000 units a year (probably an understatement) he makes $30,000. That's purely US market and purely puclishing royalties. Add in mechanical royalties, sheetmusic etc. He's not making a living, but it's still money. Copyright lasts for 75 years currently (from the time the artist died), Ravi will be making money for a good while yet.

Imagine my good fortune to spend anywhere from 30-90 (or more) with Alan Dawson ONCE a WEEK for 2 years in the early 70's at Berklee in Boston. Now, 35+ years later I still think about this great man everyday and all the things he taught me about drums and music. My students learn the things he taught me. RIP Alan...you will live forever in all the things you gave so many of us in your knowledge and wisdom.

From 1:26-1:50, Mulligan is quoting "Squeeze Me (But Please Don't Tease Me)" which Ray Nance sang with the Ellington band. (Youtube has him doing it. Just search Ray Nance). "Squeeze me" isn't even a 12-bar, but Mulligan makes part of it work as one here. Cool!

Wow, there's a video of this album?? Fantastic. This is on CD as Dave Brubeck Trio & Gerry Mulligan Live at the Berlin Philharmonie. Brubeck's solo is about as crazy as he ever got. This group is so hot, they give the Classic Quartet a run for their money sometimes.

I agree Waffles... Black people are just better at stuff. But this Jerry Mulligan and Pepper Adams, Nick brignola were still as good as Sahib Shihab and Harry Carney.. harry Carney is still my favorite though. It's black music though... What do white people expect?

Maybe Mulligan and Brubeck clicked so well because Brubeck is actually a very percussive pianist who plays with a lot of drive, and perhaps that's what Mulligan missed in most pianists. That's my theory. Whatever the case, this is a great Brubeck lineup as well. I have the 1971 Newport album (jazz festival) and their version of Take Five on that album is astonishing.

Gerry Mulligan didn't like pianists. But his collaboration with Dave Brubeck seems effortless and without any stress. The rhythm section with Jack Six and Alan Dawson is impeccable. Thanks for posting this musical gem.
