It's amazing that people are so superficial when she had more talent than most of what's around today. However, I can see how they would focus more on her looks. Yes, she's overweight, and in society that's always been a bad thing. Which takes away from the person's view of someone because in their mind overweight = worthless. Heh, good point... Never thought of it that way before with the trade off. The thing I love about songs like this is the simplicity which is what made it sound so good on a mono car radio. I can't stand how new songs have 15 - 20 tracks in the recording, so you need a good stereo to hear the full range of murky computer sounds. I'm only 23, but I don't listen to much past the early 90s... Sometimes I feel old for being able to connect with new music :-p

Way kewl. You are fortunate. I saw pics of Larry just after 9/11, posing in his driveway, with a shirt on that says: "Got Milk?" The Association came to my hometown in October of 1980 and gave a wonderful performance. Larry says he misses Kauai and the good food and makes frequent trips back to the Islands. I miss Brian Leslie Cole. He died two days prior to my 17-year-old cousin, same year too. My cousin also overdosed on China white. 1972 was a hard summer for me.

I was two years old when "Along Comes The Association" came out, and luckily my older siblings grabbed it and made it a staple in our household. I haven't listened to it in many years, and I recently pulled it out of my LP stacks. Man, did it EVER hold up! The writing, the instrumental work and the vocal harmonies rival just about anything else out there. I was in tears listening to these tracks. This video (although likely synched) was a real treat to watch.

yes. spanky and our gang performed "give a damn" on the "smothers brothers comedy hour" shortly after the single came out in 1968. i had the single at the time and can still remember watching them perform it on tv. cbs took a lot of flak for airing the performance; one complaint reportedly came from richard nixon! i don't know if it's available on any of the smothers brothers dvd compilations. if it was, i'm sure it would have made it's way to youtube by now!

The whiz kids with the Moogs really DID put a kibosh on this kind of musc. I think they tried to be like the acid rockers in sound and then all of these weird noise became perceives as not only rock but jazz too. But maybe the biggest reason had to be Leslie West of Mountain, Grand Funk and AEROSMITH fit the rancor of the end of the Vietnam era.

Except I'm not yet 42, was in diapers to a toddler through their chart run and I think the Steve Allen Benny movie was awesome, Harry James I idolize a bit and Helen Forrest had the voice of Heaven. Elaine, to me, is a daughter of Helen or any of the wonderful lady band vocalists of distinction then with a touch of Edith Piaf's romance. Just flat out swell! Yes, Cohen wrote this as another noted, another truimph of grace.

Well, Dionne's probably got the more disciplined technique and the more impressive pipes - but Dusty is a far better actress. Dionne Warwick is magnificent, but she could never go up as one of the great lyric interpreters like Judy Garland or Frank Sinatra - Dusty could. Dionne had range, but Dusty had versatility - Dust sang folk, blues, showtunes, soul, all of it. But both were great. Although from what I hear, Dusty was the more loveable personality by far.

There's 2 recorded versions of this song. Russ obviously sings lead on one, the other has Terry (I think) doing the lead vocal. I also remember that Jim Yester once commented on the old AAA website that they actually played their instruments on Renaissance. However, maybe he didn't mean that Ted played drums and perhaps it is Hal Blaine. They were certainly capable of playing their instruments as anyone who has ever seen them live can verify.

This song is from a really great album, the cumulative effect of some of the songs is shivers. There is a sequence of three songs, I think it's the last three songs on side one, really knocks me for a loop. A different lead vocalist on each, as well. Doesn't hurt to have Hal Blaine on drums, but I love the singing and the distinctive pop worldview and the attendent romance within it. Now I'll search for the MFQ! Wow, what a wonderful video. Incredible that it still exists. This was one of my all-time favorites by my all-time favorite group. "Renaissance" had so much substance musically and it's a shame that it wasn't more of a commercial success. Nobody harmonized like the Association and they were almost as tight in concert as they were in the studio. Can't wait to check out some of the other clips. Thanks for posting them!

Ringo's new single is very nice. I also really like the 70's 45 of "Photograph" by him. No question, the Beatles had many good songs. - The Association was able to change the songs up at will, hard rock to soft ballads. Icbr, "Barefoot Gentleman" sure is a strong pick, Jim Yester does a wonderful job on it. "Along the Way" should have been a huge chart hit, as well. Both great groups, it is cool to know that The Association beat the Beatles out in voting for the favorite group, in 1967! John A.

My taste in Andy developed while my Mother & Dad would listen & watch the Andy williams show every week on TV. This started back in 1965 or so and as a young teenager growing up I naturally sat and watched Andy myself. I thought, wow, this guy really has a great voice which is so natural and effortless when he strikes up a tune. I guess Andy is still doing well even at the age of 81 or 82

The members have rather different voices. But you make a good point, dunskie many times their voices blend so very well it is hard to pick out a single member. Jim and Gary always hit the high notes, Terry is always the lowest voice along with Brian. Ted had a wonderful range, but on "Standing Still" for example, his voice is very strong as the lead. The strong point is how the 6 all blended so well as a group. I love your "insane vocal arrangements comment"! Its perfect for them! Thanks!John A.

Thanks dude. I always thaught this song rocked. Terry wrote another one called "Goodbye Forever" that I really liked too. It is real hard to tell which one of the guys is singing each tune though, huh?Other than Larry Ramos,they all sound very alike to me. Thanks again. These guys were a very interesting band. This was the best song they put out, IMO. Too bad it never gets radio time. This song was indeed their crack at late 60's psychedelia that was so prevalent at the time. They should've gone further with it. The Association would've been a badass psychedelic band. They are truly one of the most underrated bands of the 60's.

To me, she was the prettiest of the Mama voices. Very smooth and deep (Cass I loved, but her voice was alittle 'nasally'). I think Michelle's beauty hurt her-who knows why, it seemed obligatory to say "Cass was the best" (RIP). What a gorgeous, talented lady, what a beautiful song. The more I hear it the more I like it. I saw her once on "the Gong Show"-for real-and she sang so beautiful, it seemed a shame-she was too good to be on that show.She was radiant then and a lovely Grandma today..

It is important to remember Michelle was there before Cass. I find it ridiculous when I run into those who think Michelle was just standing there with her mouth open. She was very important to their sound. That is why Jill Gibson did work out. Please folks, get Michelle's CD. Some of the recordings will blow you away. Michelle is twice the performer the big "girl" names are today. "Aloha Louie" is enough to sell the CD. "Paid The Price" will stop you in your tracks.

It is not often that a "cover version" of a song, far outshines the original! This is so powerful and layered, for me it is a real treat. Gosh, these vocals sound just incredible! WOW! Really fun to watch as well. Ted Bluechel, Jr. still has his hair slicked back, just like when he was a "Cherry Hill Singers" member, before joining the Association in 1965. Little did the music world know how great these guys would become! John A.

Too right, John, and how much more brilliant they got. From the lovely Everything that Touches You and Standing Still, to P. F. Sloan, with that terrifically amusing piece by Brian Cole as Roy Rogers (what would Brian have achieved had he lived?), Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies to Across the Persian Gulf a wonderfully choral, classical piece. We are very, very lucky not only to benefit from their music but to know that they still perform but, sadly for me, not in the UK!

You are 100% correct on that! Have you ever given "Standing Still" a spin on the old turntable? It is as strong as "Cherish", in my opinion. Ted Bluechel Jr., their outstanding drummer, wrote it! I just got a copy of 45 rpm "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You". It was only a Calif. only, local hit, in 1965, on the Jubilee label. This song followed that on a new label, Valiant. Wow, what raw power on that! A stunning gem that should see much more attention than it has ever gotten so far! John A.
