um, not quite. elton john wrote all the piano parts, the only things he didn't write were the lyrics, which were written by bernie taupin. bernie taupin didn't write any songs, just poems, and elton would write to them.

Loved this song the first time I heard it. It's about the last run of the Illinois Central passenger train known as "City of New Orleans." As a railroad buff it made me sad thinking about the disappearing name trains in the America. Happened right after the advent of Amtrak in 1971. Amtrak may have saved passenger service, but the railroads lost a lot of character. Thanks for posting this wonderful memory.

I know. That's my favorite line in the song.
