Cockpit view landing Hong Kong Kai Tak in rain IGS approach

As requested. A shorter version of the approach into Kai Tak without the music. Again, the lead in lights are barely visible through the rain as the video starts and then we get a great view of the checkerboard through to touchdown. This approach is in the rain. The other video is a little clearer but still grey out.

it only existed in Kai Tak. It's like an ils approach, but instead of guiding the plane towards the threshold, it quides it to the check board. Then the pilot performs a visual turn and landing. And by the way, IGS stands for instrumental guidance system.

Awesome landing if I've ever seen one! For better or worse, Kai Tak is no longer there to test the pilots' true skills, but these guys really did an impressive job; looking at this video one would actually believe that the Runway 13 approach was no big deal... Respect!

If AP is linked with ILS and Appr switch is on it will, however, it only works effectively at about 11NM from the runway, and you have to be close or nearly directly ahead of the runway. Your AP will go of the glideslope and will land it automated. You will usually also have Auto-throttle on also.

i think that the video is a bit strange, completly authentic but just very old. Kia tak has been closed now for a quite a while and it was in one of the older model 747 (the 747-400 doesnt have a naviagotor as this one does). Also, since september 11th you are not allowed in the cocpit of the plane at all. but it is a very good video taken by someone with a once in a lifetime experiance.

great coverage, really breath taking. i take it this was a 737? we were in dc over the labor day w/e and took the DC Ducks tour and was "swimming" along the potomac towards the end of runway 1 "northbound", it was awesome seeing the planes takeoff i never knew the airport only had 1 runway, they have enough land to construct a second, why not, right?

Instrument guidance system. Its almost like the ILS but it "guides" you to the checkerboard on the hill as you can see on the left side in 1:00. When you reach the checkerboard then you fly visually and make a right 47 degree turn to line up with the runway for landing. Hope this helps =)

Was a great landing (saved by the pilot); not really dangerous...did you see how the pilot moved the plane "around the vertical axis?" Nice job. Also used the landing gear to "pivot" the plane to the left to line up with the center line.

Now THAT is why they built a new airport. All the pilots were complaining and guess what? if you go to Kowloon, they had a limit on the floors for apartments and buildings and if you go up on a building roof, you can see an almost straight kind of 'floor' of roofs. But now that the laws have been removed, massive skyscrapers are springing up all around town.

Every airline have to do like this when landing at Kai Tak Airport. This is also for passenger safety. If the pilot didn't do steep turning like this then the plane will crash. If I'm a pilot and if I take care of passengers' safety, I will do this because I don't want my plane to crash. If we are passengers? we have no choice because Kai Tak is the only airport in Hong Kong before. Also, it is the responsibility for the passengers to sit properly and have their belt properly tied.

There were quite a few reasons, it had become boxed in by the city which meant no room for expansion, and capacity was stretched as it only had a single runway, so the only way to expand was to build a new airport further away. Another reason was due to its relatively dangerous approach that was low over the city and involved a pretty sharp bank on final approach.

i think that is a simulator, i dont know but i think. the buildings don't look that real on take off and that was a slow take off as it looks like. i don't know and i wasn't there but i'm assuming that if this was a 747, he should take off in a very high speed due to the huge aircraft.

Yehh of course it was a dangerous approach. Hense why only certain ranked pilots could actually fly there since it used an IGS approach. Plus theres many more dangerous airpots that are not closed. Lukla, St.Maarten, St.Barths(Approach over a hill then nose dive for the runway which is quite short. Think of it as a smaller St.maarten but no fence for the beach and the hill approach can be used unlike TNCM)

shame?!? haha are you crazy?! if i was ever on a plane to Hong Kong and they told me they were landing in Kai Tak, i would shit my pants. i was in HK two weeks ago and our tour guide was mentioning about how quick HK was changing and brought up the airport. apparently Kai Tak was the most dangerous airport on the planet what with the buildings and the mountains. he's talked to a few of the pilots too and they hated Kai Tak xD so i'd rather stay safe than risk my life.

I work for NATS, good luck applying, it's a tough assessment to get in to the college, but it's very achievable and worth it. A military base can be beneficial although no-one on my course had any. I was interested by your comment about IATA codes being used primarily in the "industry", at NATS, and in ATC generally, ICAO codes are used for all aircraft, airfield designators etc.

this is cool i like cathay pacific. i've flown many times to the philippines and we stop in hong kong. the hong kong flight is flippin 13 hours from LA to Hong Kong..and cathay pacific made it really comfy, unlike philippine airlines :] very safe
