Paul McCartney only did Vanilla Sky that I know of, but Sting had his share of great hits for films, he was really great, as exhibited best IMO in You Will Be My 'Ain True Love. And then of course there's Bill Conti and Burt Bacharach... Scarlet Tide is a masterful work so I will count Elvis Costello... Poledouris' song Hymn To Red October is amazing as well, and of course Goldsmith's Ave Satani is legendary...

What about John Williams' songs? Check out Star of Bethlehem, it's one of the most moving songs I can think of from a film, in fact all the songs from the Home Alone series (Somewhere In My Memory, Christmas Star) are worthy of praise. When You're Alone is moving enough to bring tears to one's eyes. Elfman's songs are great as well, and how about the Sherman brothers? They wrote some of the greatest songs of all time for films. The first one that comes to mind is Hushabye Mountain.

I still disagree with that. Have you heard Silvestri's songs or Goldenthal's? Burn It Blue is really a fine piece of orchestration. I haven't heard Across The Universe yet but I know there's a lot of praise for that. (still no news about Grendel being released sadly but that would be amazing to hear)

I'm really surprised you don't think Elliot Goldenthal is talented, what with him having studied under Copland an all. Michael Kamen not a good composer? Give Don Juan DeMarco a listen. Steiner's Gone With The Wind is one of the greatest of all time, as with Casablanca and King Kong! I disagree. I think he is right up there with those people. And I think that out of that list, these were good: Alan Silvestri Jerry Goldsmith John Williams James Horner John Debney Alfred Newman (along with Thomas and David) Along with Alan Menken, these guys are gods as well. Especially Williams and Goldsmith.

Talented, yes, and his songs deserved the Oscars they got, but he is nowhere near the quality of Alan Silvestri, James Newton Howard, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, James Horner, Thomas Newman, Michael Kamen, Bernard Herman, Nino Rota, Max Steiner, Miklos Rosza, Dimitri Tiomkin, Alex North, Trevor Jones, Randy Edelman, John Debney, Alfred Newman (who has NINE Oscars, and unlike Menken, he's won them for scores ONLY), Elmer Bernstein, or Elliot Goldenthal.

Webber, while good, never really wows me. Menken's songs are great, but sometimes his scores come out of nowhere and blow me away. Farewell almost made me cry and Sanctuary! is great for whenever I go running, it gets my blood flowing! I just love that Menken's music can reach someone on an emotional level. It's a pity he doesn't do straight scoring or any work outside of Disney as he would be amazing, I'm sure of it!

I love Menken! He is one of the most talented composers of our era! Many dismiss his work as "lightweight" and "fluffy" but that is not the case. Especially Farewell and Sanctuary!... some of the best cues ever written for film!
