Without the Beatles, Rock Music in 1965 would have been produced by Phil Spector and would be singing follow-ups to My Boyfriend's Back. Think about that. Without the Beatles British Rock there would have been no Kinks, The Rolling Stones instead you would have had Cliff Richard and Elvis wannabees. The Beatles musically are way more advanced than the Stones.The Stones for the most part a 4/4 three chord band. The Beatles used non-western harmonies and polyrhythms.

When the Edge inducted the Clash into the Rock n Roll HOF, he stated the two greatest "rock n roll" bands are the Rolling Stones and the Clash, that the Beatles were a "POP" band. I think that says it well. I'm a huge fan of both bands. I only wish the Beatles had stayed together longer and performed longer (long enough to make 1 good live album). By the time I could go to concerts...they had already given up on touring.

ok, so they both made some great songs, Beatles more so... north vs south again, like blur & oasis same story, different music..and oasis came out on top.. Well McCartney did not like the Let It Be album. Not that it matters the Rolling Stone first US Tour was June of 1964. Sorry again give credit to the Beatles for starting the British Invasion. We will never know now because the Beatles started it and The Stones did not. The Kinks were hardly established either in early 1964. Their first single was a cover version. While the Beatles were having huge hits a year before them with their own songs. Give some credit to where its due.

You can't assume the British Invasion would have started without the Beatles. Thats revisionist history. Keith Richards has said they would not have made it in America without them. The Kinks were barely signed as a band when the Beatles broke through in America. You know the Kinks first single was "Long Tall Sally" which was covered by also by the Beatles. I know its a sore subject with Stones fans but they were influenced by the Beatles to write their own tunes.

You don't think Spector evolved? He produced the Beatles "Let It Be". Some say their best "sounding" album. I also disagree with you a far as saying no Kinks etc. These bands were already alive and well. Many as good if not better than the Beatles. Don't get me wrong, I love the Beatles and as a kid, was in awe when they debuted on US television. For certain the British invasion was coming with or without the Beatles. In fact, the Rolling Stones did a tour here in 63' (before the Beatles).

They way they combine R and B and soul and rock is unsurpassed in music. Their stuff always sounds fresh. Their classics are absolutely timeless. Many argue the Beatles are the greatest. But as the Edge put it "the Beatles were a pop band, the Stones are a rock n roll band". All music may be subjective, but popular and critical concensus say the Stones are the greatest. Their library and legacy prove it. I remember back in around 67' here in Los Angeles, one of the local rock stations had "weekend war" between the Beatles and Stones where they'd play a song from each band and listners would call in and vote. Stones won it bigtime!

Probably the most important point made in this debate. Yes the Stones could quite easily have gone down the 'Pop' music route. Instead they stuck mostly to their roots and their own vision. It was, IMO, the Beatles who had to change THEIR music. Both bands, through their music and attitudes, helped to change the way we viewed our place in the world.

Beatles are definately the better band. In terms of numbers I think the Beatles have more in terms of good original work. Beatles not only opened the door to the British Invasion, but they opened many other rooms when they pushed their music to newer boundaries such as getting Indian instruments and playing around in the studio. Despite all this I still like the Stones more. I love blues so the Stones do it for me. They sing about real life, not the sappy stuff of fantasy in Beatles songs.

The last long section of "I Want You/She's so Heavy" where the guitars are heavily layered withthat spooky dark chord progression like the soundtrack to a Edgar Allen Poe piece, with the wind machine howling. I think THAT is the first arrival of what would later be known as Black-Sabbath-genre heavy metal and, later, grunge. I don't think anything people called 'heavy metal' that came before it was dark and ominous like that last section of "I Want you".

The fact is that the Stones have influenced Rock and Roll more than any other single band in history. There is no doubt that the Beatles were a fantastic, extremely talented, once-in-a-lifetime group, but their stuff has slowly faded away, while the Stones driving rythyms are still pounding away, just as fresh and powerful as ever. Their timelessness is simply amazing, and unmatched in music.
