Very, very well said, winpoint. I have to wonder in turn why people wonder; I think Coltrane is the most profound musician since Beethoven. I'm an atheist, but if I ever come close to believing in god, it when I am listening to Coltrane. Oh, and I couldn't agree more about Elvin Jones. I would add that McCoy Tyner is pretty fucking extraordinary as well; few pianists have such a rich colorful, and deeply poetic sound.

CJ my hat goes off to you. As a trumpet player for over 40 years I haven't heard anyone with the touch of Lee. Sometimes I've been referred to as Lil Roy (Eldridge) but I've always loved the sound Lee was able to achieve I hope when I am gone those that hear my songs compare me to the sound he was so famous for. The guy was definitely a genius. I'll still trying to catch up to him. Lost my collection years ago in a flood. Thanks for refreshing my memory.

I wouldn't say he was a prodigy as much as he was a hard worker at perfecting his craft at an early age. The guy played trumpet for hours on end when he was in his teens, took all music courses by the end of his high school career, and was drove the trolley to Clifford's house every week. Morgan definitely earned his perfection on the trumpet through practice, but there was still some talent there before that.

Check out his versions of 'Easy Living,' 'Just in Time,' 'You're Mine You,' 'Like Someone in Love,' 'Whisper Not,''Lover Man,' and the 'Cry for My People.' The man also created his own branch of love songs like 'Carolyn,' 'A Waltz for Fran,' 'Lament for Stacy,' 'Twilight Mist,' 'Pisces,' 'Melancholee,' and 'Ceora.' Morgan was beyond anyone in the 60's at creating a tender, warm tune.

This song is one of my favorite. The lead voice is really beautiful, and the instruments have an early 70s very good sound. I discovered the LP in secondhand trade, I didn't know this band before, I bought it because of the recording date (1973, a great date of the music !) and I fell in love with this tune ! I'm 58 and grew up enjoying the greats from Motown. My music interests have expanded to include opera and jazz, but I still love the Motown sound and always will. The Marvelettes always lived up to their name. Thanks so much for this and all the wonderful videos on this channel. I've noticed many comments posted by people much younger than I about Motown. Taking nothing away from Gladys Horton's superb lead vocal work on the earlier hits by group, but when Smokey Robinson sought to establish a vocal indentity for Wanda Young Rogers as a lead singer too, the Marvelettes now became a group with astonishing sex appeal, and there is no better example than "Hunter." When this used to start up on AM radio, Wanda just carried you up to the clouds for three minutes and you could focus on nothing else but her sultry delivery. An evergreen performance.

Wow, now you talkin'. The Point' had an all jazz format until the early 90's and was the only station that allowed the student body to run the station. Do you remember Ludwig Van Trick? Last I saw him as a security guard at Mercy Hospital in Philadelphia a few years ago. I do try to catch J. Micheal Harrison on Fridays with "the Bridge". He and Harrison Ridley Jr. are the only personalities left at the "Point". Everythings so damn corporate now.

Ahhh, the good ole' days with the Point'. I was a student producer at WRTI for Iggy Alexander in the mid to late 80's. I was turned on to the sound of the Philly homeboy and never left. He really grooved. I was wondering if there was enough jazz musicians to make up a Philly Hall of Fame. It would certainly seem plausible. It should rank with New York, and Chicago as a place for all time creativity for the music. Do Tell.

Even as a younger person in the early 70's, there was something about Jessica's voice that really moved me. I don't know much about her except what was read off liner notes but her singin' was all that was required. Here on the east coast, she is greatly appreciated for her voice range on cuts like this one and "I'd Rather Have You" and "Lady Mae"

Wishful thinking at best. First, there's no groups being produced to sing four part harmony. Second, as long as record companies are corporately controlled and mandated to turn a profit, artists packaged as singing groups are deemed too expensive and unescessary. These singing groups from the 60's and 70's are forever gone. It's tragic.

Forgot to mention, dressing all in white was also part of being a Sri Chinmoy disciple. Michael Walden was also friends with Santana and McLaughlin, and a fellow disciple. He still is, AFAIK. "Narada" was his spiritual name, given by Sri Chinmoy, BTW. I think Mahavishnu was the name given to McLaughlin, too.

He and John McLaughlin were both disciples of Sri Chinmoy, at the time. I knew there was something deeply mystical about this album for years. Was living in Buenos Aires when it came out. Years later I moved to the US, and later Canada, and became a disciple of Sri Chinmoy myself, and that's when I heard the whole story. I was living in Venezuela at the time. This one and "Mirage" were great hits over there back then. A couple of years before, Santana went to Caracas for a concert. The promoters called it "El Santanazo". It was a hoot but at the stadium a fan died of an overdose, another was knifed, and a third fell (or was pushed) from the highest part of the stadium and was killed.

Oh Yeah, "Open Your Eyes You Can Fly" Flora Purim's firt lp in 77' after gettin out of jail for heroin. Alphonso definitely cooked on the title cut and was another of my bass heroes as one of the most sought after studio bassman from that time. him Stanley and Vic Bailey has signature styles that last.

I especially like the bass line he plays during the solos in "Sun Goddess"..That's one of my favorite tunes , I wrote a big band arragement to "Sun Goddess" when I was in college...By the way , have you heard the bass line Alphonso Johnson put down in the tune "Open Your Eyes" written by Chick Corea and sung by Flora Purin..??? That bass line is wicked...I'll try to put the tune up in a couple weeks...

Cool! I felt the music from this group from the very beginning. "Zanzibar" was the tune that got me into playing the bass. Verdine cooked on that cut and he was anointed my "Bass Hero" and I've been there every since. His work on "New World Symphony" and "Sun Goddess" blew me away.
