But you are very right. When I wrote to the Hermit, I was thinking quite a bit of which words to use. And strangely, I didn't quite made up my mind, but used both the "Bush Administration" as well as "the American population" and just "America". And as I've said, I don't believe it's totally fair to say it's only the government and brass that needs the enemy. I think the people feel it's a comfort. Just like in Orwell's novel.

Are you OK with that? Of course not! No one is, but no one does anything hardcore about it. I don't see a real impeachment process, or the millions marching to Washington - all I really see is apathy, and a well-well mentallity. And I think they don't because most people are just a little bit afraid. And in THAT sense, even the people need the enemy. They need an enemy for the comfort of having someone to blame, and take away the pain of not living in the Utopia which they believe they inhabit.

I hear you, but I'm not sure if that is the complete truth. Why, then, would "they" need an enemy? As I see it, the simplest answer to that would be that they need an enemy to disorient the population (and also short term stuff like oil, making money, weapons deals and so on). They disorient the population so that people don't focus that much on domestic problems such as poverty, corruption, inequality, dysfuntional democracy, and so on.

Yeah I must say that equating early American dissent in regards to the British empire to the dissent spawning from the war in Iraq is ridiculous. It doesn't matter what the reason for war is nowadays. In the words of Nixon "Never again can we (Americans) fight a lengthy war..." Note: I *do* live in Berkeley and I've seen plenty of street petitions and performers. I think the military should not receive less rights than any other organization no matter the horrible things done by any part of the military. Instead of fighting against freedom to advertise- I'd like to see us fighting against the torture and dehumanization of any/all people.

I'm one of those commie, hippie, folks- I support the military's ability to have an office on campus- I support their right to recruit on the street. I support letting people make their own decisions and not silencing one side or the other. I do not support any violent action towards a person for having a different belief than another. I do not support our continued stay in the war. If I were to petition something, it would not be silence,(ours or the military's) it would be peace and freedom.

I don't know about MAF's desire to "penalize people". I totally support Code Pink's and WCW's right to protest, but not at the expense of the recruiters' ability to function in their duty. I don't have a problem with Code Pink Protesting. I'm no huge fan of the Iraq War. However, Code Pink doesn't have the right to block a door and keep people out. They can march, scream and shout. They have a right to. But, they don't have a right to step on the rights of other people. Also, The reason I got involved into this (before MAF silenced me) was I think it's hilarious that they don't trust the Congress, Courts and Constitution to take care of issues such as protesters at a recruiting center.
